ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Four members of the Elizabethtown College field hockey team have been named to the All-Commonwealth Conference teams for the 2006 season. Senior midfielder Laura Rinck (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove Area) earned a place on the First Team, and sophomore forward Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley), senior defender Jenna Mastromarino (Sinking Spring, PA/Holy Name) and senior midfield Brandy Spriggle (Beaver Springs, PA/West Snyder) all earned spots on the Second Team. Also, Elizabethtown head coach Sharon Sweger has been named the Commonwealth Conference Coach of the Year.
This is Rinck’s second time on the All-Commonwealth Conference teams and her first time on the First Team, as she earned Second Team honors last year. She was also recently selected to play in the NFHCA national Senior All-Star Game. This year, she is tied for the Elizabethtown team lead in goals scored with seven, and she is tied for the team lead in game-winning goals with three. She is tied for third among the Blue Jays in assists with four, and she ranks third on the team in points with 18. She has started all 18 of Etown’s games in 2006. In her career, she has 15 goals, 19 assists, 49 points, five game-winning goals and one defensive save.
Angstadt has earned all-conference honors for the first time in her career in 2006. This year, she leads Elizabethtown in points with 20 and is tied for the team lead in goals with seven and in game-winning goals with three. She is also second on the team in assists with six. In her two-year career with Elizabethtown, she has 10 goals, seven assists and 27 points.
Mastromarino has also earned a spot on the all-conference teams for the first time in her career this season. She has one assist, one point and one defensive save in the the backfield in 2006. Through 19 games this season, the Elizabethtown defense has allowed just 13 goals, 120 shots, and 88 shots on goal. In her four-year career, she has totaled one goal, three assists, five points and four defensive saves.
2006 is Spriggle’s second consecutive year on the All-Commonwealth Conference Second Team. This season, she leads Elizabethtown in assists with nine, and she is tied for the team lead in game-winning goals with three. She is second on the team in points with 19, and she is tied for fifth on the team in goals scored with five. In four seasons, she has totaled 10 goals, 16 assists, 36 points and four defensive saves.
Sweger has been named the Commonwealth Conference’s Coach of the Year for the second year in a row. Now in her third season coaching the Blue Jays, the team is currently 15-5 overall and is ranked 13th in the nation. In 2005, her second season, the team finished 13-5 overall, a dramatic turnaround from the 2004 season when the team went 4-16.
This season, Elizabethtown reached the Commonwealth Conference playoff semifinals for the second year in a row. The Blue Jays, which fell in the semifinals yesterday to nationally eighth-ranked Lebanon Valley College, must now wait to see whether they receive an at-large bid in the NCAA Division III tournament field, which is expected to be announced by the NCAA on http://www.ncaasports.com Sunday night at around 9:00 p.m. |
