Elizabethtown College Senior Dawn Mellen Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team in Women’s Soccer

Dawn Mellen '07 (#30).ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College senior goaltender Dawn Mellen (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills Regional) had been named to the ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District 2 First Team in women’s soccer, as selected by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). By landing a spot on the first team, Mellen is on the ballot for the ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-America women’s soccer team, which will be announced by CoSIDA Tuesday, November 21.

Mellen is the Elizabethtown women’s soccer program’s first CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree since 2003. Thus far in 2006, she has a goals against average of 0.70 in 11 games and 1,030 minutes of work. She has made 44 saves for a save percentage of .846, and she has totaled six complete game shutouts and an 8-1-2 win-loss record. Earlier this season, she was named the Commonwealth Conference’s Defender/Goaltender of the Week one time. She currently ranks third in the Commonwealth Conference in both goals against average and save percentage, and she leads the conference in shutouts per game.

Dawn Mellen '07 (#30).In her soccer career at Elizabethtown, Mellen has a goals against average of 1.12, 86 saves and nine complete game shutouts over four seasons. She is a four-time member of the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation (MASCAC) All-Academic Team. Also a thrower for the Elizabethtown track & field team, Mellen was an All-Middle Atlantic Conference Second Team honoree in track & field in 2005 when she placed fifth in the weight throw at the Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships. She is also an Elizabethtown College Scholar and Dean’s List member.

The Elizabethtown College women’s soccer team is currently 11-4-3 overall and will return to action on the road in the Commonwealth Conference championship game against Messiah College at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, November 4.

The District 2 College Division in the CoSIDA Academic All-America program consists of all non-NCAA Division I colleges and universities in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. The members of CoSIDA by districts select the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Teams, and the 11 first team selections in each district now move on to the national ballot for ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.

To be nominated for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be of at least sophomore academic standing with a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
