FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown College Sophomore Sam Heaps Named a National Player of the Week in Baseball for NCAA Division III ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College sophomore pitcher Sam Heaps (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) has been named one of three NCAA Division III National Players of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association, announced today. He shared the National Pitcher of the Week honors with Brad Mountain of Eastern Nazarene College, while Adam Evanoff of Wisconsin-Stevens Point was named the National Hitter of the Week. Heaps was also named the Commonwealth Conference’s Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 15. Heaps pitched a no-hitter in his only appearance on the mound last week, and 11-0 seven-inning win over Juniata College in the first half of a conference doubleheader Saturday. He surrendered three walks and struck out six in seven innings of work. At the plate for the week, he batted 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Thus far this season, Heaps has a 1.60 earned run average in seven appearances, seven starts and 45 innings. He has a 6-1 win-loss record, and he has four complete games and two shutouts. He has 31 striketouts, 10 walks, 33 hits allowed, 10 runs and seven earned runs allowed in that time. Opponents are batting just .206 against him. The Elizabethtown College baseball team is currently 17-10 overall and 11-4 in the Commonwealth Conference. The Blue Jays will return to action at home Friday, April 20 in a conference nine-inning game against Widener University beginning at 3:30 p.m. |
