Elizabethtown Men, Messiah Women, Win 2007 MAC Outdoor Titles

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men and the Messiah College women are the 2007 outdoor champions of the Middle Atlantic Conference. The Etown men placed first out of 10 teams at their home facility with 174.5 points, while the Messiah women finished first out of 10 teams with 200 points. On the men’s side, Moravian placed second with 142 points, and Messiah was third with 128 points. On the women’s side, Moravian finished second with 166.5 points, while Elizabethtown was third with 108 points. The men's title was the second MAC outdoor title ever for the Elizabethtown men and the first since 2004. It caps a year where Elizabethtown captured the “triple crown,” having won MAC cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field titles, for the first time since 2004 and the second time ever. It was the second MAC outdoor title in a row for the Messiah College women. The 2007 MAC Outdoor Championships were the first MAC Championships ever hosted by Elizabethtown, as well as the last before Moravian, Juniata College and Susquehanna University leave for the newly-formed Landmark Conference in 2007-08 and several new members join the MAC.

Moravian’s Ozzie Brown was named the Most Outstanding Athlete on the men’s side, and the Greyhounds’ Michael Blenk was named the MAC Rookie of the Year for the men. Etown head coach Chris Straub was named the men’s Coach of the Year. Amy Reed of Messiah was named the Most Outstanding Athlete on the women’s side, and Kristen Bates of Messiah was the women’s Rookie of the Year. Messiah head coach Dale Fogelsanger was named the women’s Coach of the Year.

As the last meet of the MAC’s old order, it proved a fitting swan song for the conference’s current line-up as seven MAC Championship records were broken and one was tied, three NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship automatic qualifying performances were attained, and as 20 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship provisional qualifying marks were posted. Several events produced multiple NCAA qualifiers.

In the preliminaries of the men’s 110m high hurdles Friday, Ozzie Brown of Moravian posted a time of 14.38 seconds to set a new MAC Championship record by 0.11 second and automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. In the women’s heptathlon, Amy Reed of Messiah won the competition with a score of 4,044, breaking her old MAC record by 10 points. In the women’s pole vault, Samantha Ward of DeSales University cleared 10’6” to tie the MAC Outdoor Championship record. Moravian’s women’s 4x100m relay team set a new MAC Championship record of 48.20 seconds, which was also an NCAA provisional time. Reed hit an automatic NCAA qualifying mark and grabbed another conference championship record in the javelin throw Saturday with a distance of 148’0.” Brown earned another MAC Championship record and an NCAA provisional mark in the men’s 100m dash with a final time of 10.60 seconds. In the women’s 400m hurdles, Emily Lepley of Susquehanna set an MAC record and made the NCAA automatic qualifying standard with a time of 1:01.85. In the men’s hammer throw, Nick Orfanella of Lebanon Valley College set a new MAC Championship record with a toss of 175’5”that also provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Championships.

Brown also had NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the 200m (21.37) and in the long jump (23’4”), and Orfanella had a provisional qualifying performance of 159’0” in the discus throw. Also in the men’s 110m hurdles, Bryon Laird of Lebanon Valley, Chris Slabek of Widener, and Nathaniel Tussey of Moravian all provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with respective times of 14.68, 14.74 and 14.84 seconds.

In the men’s high jump, Mike Marr of Susquehanna provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a winning clearance of 6’8-3/4.” Nicholas Kipe of Messiah sprang 46’5-1/4” in the triple jump to win that event and provisionally qualify for NCAAs. Erin Recker of Moravian achieved an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 12.17 seconds in the 100m, and Dana Haslett of Moravian provisionally qualified with a time of 25.13 seconds in the 200m. In the men’s 400m, Etown’s Drew Graybeal provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III championships with a time of 47.89 seconds, as did silver medalist Patrick Roach of Messiah in 48.22 seconds.

In the men’s pole vault, Elizabethtown took first and second place, respectively, on identical NCAA provisional qualifying heights of 15’5-1/2” by Kevin Clark and D.J. Lehr, respectively. In the men’s javelin throw, gold medalist Kyle Mazur of Juniata provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a distance of 196’4,” while silver medalist A.J.
