ETOWN'S SPENCE AND NOWELL NAMED TO MAC SOFTBALL ALL-STAR TEAMS

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Two members of the Elizabethtown softball team have been named Middle Atlantic Conference All-Stars. Junior shortstop Kelly Spence (Glenolden, PA/Interboro) was named to the MAC Commonwealth First Team, and junior centerfielder and pitcher Kristy Nowell (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth) was named to the MAC Commonwealth Second Team.

Spence, a junior shortstop, appeared in all 26 games for the Blue Jays this season. She leads the team in batting average (.379), hits (33), runs scored (15), doubles (6) and stolen bases (14). She was also among the team leaders in runs batted in (10) and walks (5).

A two-year letterwinner, she started all 36 games for the Blue Jays in 1999. She led the team in hits (32), slugging percentage (.446), stolen bases (13) and RBI (21) and was among the team leaders in runs scored (19), doubles (6), batting average (.317) and on-base percentage (.372).

In addition, she was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Softball Academic Honor Roll in 1999. In 1998, she was honored as a third-team NCAA Division III East Region all-star selection and a second-team MAC Commonwealth League all-star selection. She is majoring in physical therapy at Elizabethtown and is a 1997 graduate of Interboro High School.

Nowell, a junior outfielder/pitcher and team captain, started all 26 games for the Blue Jays this season. She led the team in runs batted in (13) and was among the team leaders in hits (27), batting average (.321), runs scored (8) and doubles (4). She started12 games on the mound this season with a 4-8 record and a 2.50 earned run average in 72 innings pitched.

A two-year letterwinner, she hit .283 in 35 starts for the Blue Jays last season. She was among the team leaders in hits (30), runs scored (11), RBI (14) and doubles (4). On the mound, she led Elizabethtown with 15 starts and two shutouts and was second on the staff in victories (6), complete games (5), strikeouts (34) and innings pitched (83.2).

In addition, she was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Softball Academic Honor Roll in 1999. She was named as a Middle Atlantic Conference
Commonwealth League second-team all-star selection in 1998. She is majoring in occupational therapy at Elizabethtown and is a 1997 graduate of St. Elizabeth High School.

The Elizabethtown softball team posted an 11-15 overall record in 2000 and had a 5-9 mark in the MAC Commonwealth League.
