GETTYSBURG SWEEPS ETOWN IN BLUE JAYS' HOME OPENER

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Gettysburg overcame two-run deficits in each game to sweep a doubleheader with Elizabethtown, 5-2 and 6-4, on Monday. It was the first home action of the season for the Blue Jays, who fell to 1-7.

The Bullets (6-3) trailed 2-0 after four innings in game one, before reaching Blue Jay starter Erin Reynolds for two runs in the fifth inning to tie the game. Gettysburg then put together four straight hits to lead off the sixth, scoring three times en route to the 5-2 victory.

In game one, Etown jumped on top in its first at-bat.

Vikki Detweiler walked and stole second. After two ground outs, Kristy Nowell plated Detweiler with a single and moved to third on an error before scoring on a base hit from Reynolds.

Kristy Kordich doubled to lead off the second inning, but was forced at third base two batters later to end the threat. Gettysburg starter Angie Hoptak held Etown without a hit through the final five innings to earn her first win of the season.

In the nightcap, the Bullets trailed 4-2 after two innings before plating four runs in the third on three hits, three walks and two wild pitches to take the lead for good.

Kelly Spence ripped a two-run double in the second inning to give the Jays a 4-2 lead, but the Etown bats managed only three hits and no runs the rest of the way. Melissa Hazzard tossed three effective innings of relief to earn the win.

The Blue Jays next take the field on Tuesday, March 24 for a doubleheader at Lycoming College. Game time is 2:30 p.m. at Elizabethtown, Pa.
