SUSQUEHANNA REACHES MAC PLAYOFFS WITH GAME-ONE WIN AT ETOWN; BLUE JAYS WIN NIGHTCAP, BUT MISS POSTSEASON ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Chrissy Falcone scored on a wild pitch in the eighth inning to give Susquehanna a 3-2 game-one victory over Elizabethtown in their MAC Commonwealth League doubleheader on Saturday and a berth in the Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs. The Blue Jays answered with a 3-2 win in the second game, but finished on the outside of the conference postseason picture. Etown (15-18-1, 8-5-1 MAC Commonwealth League) needed a sweep of Susquehanna to reach the playoffs for the first time since 1994. Kristen Hogan notched her 13th win of the season in game one for the Crusaders (19-11, 10-4), allowing only one earned run on five hits while striking out nine. Tennille Shenk went 4-for-8 with an RBI and one run scored on the afternoon to lead the Susquehanna attack. Linda Milnes (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) took the game-one loss for Etown, despite allowing only one earned run and fanning nine to move within three Ks of the program record for strikeouts in a season. Kristy Nowell worked four innings to pick up the game-two win with Angela Moyer tossing the final three innings for her second save. Vikki Detweiler went 2-for-4 with a double and run scored in the opener for Etown while teammate Michelle Casserly (Sussex, N.J./High Point Regional) cracked a two-bagger and added two RBI. In the opener, Etown took a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning on Casserly's double, but the Crusaders answered with runs in the sixth and eighth frames to clinch a spot in the MAC postseason. Falcone reached on a error to open the Susquehanna eighth and moved to third on a single by Lisa Stack, who immediately stole second base. Milnes recovered to strike out Shelly Zimmerman, but a wild pitch with Shenk at the plate brought Falcone home with the winning run. Etown held the score at 3-2 on a fielder's choice and strikeout, but Hogan retired all three Blue Jays she faced in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory. In game two, Etown turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead in the third inning, courtesy of two Susquehanna errors, a wild pitch, a passed ball and a hit batter. Melissa Reinhart (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg) capped the rally by plating Casserly with a two-out single -- the only hit of the inning -- for the winning run. Moyer scattered four hits and allowed no runs to close out the game. Milnes needs three more strikeouts to set the
program record for Ks in a season, held by Tammy McDonald (110 in
1998). Etown wraps up its 1999 campaign on Tuesday, April 27 with
a non-league doubleheader at Kean (N.J.) University. Game time is
3:30 p.m.
