Etown Passes Win Totals of Previous Two Seasons, Blue Jays Now 12-3 Following Doubleheader Sweep of Kean

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- In just the third week of the 2002 season, the Elizabethtown softball team has surpassed its 2000 and 2001 win totals of 11 with a doubleheader sweep of Kean at home Tuesday. Etown improves to 12-3 overall with the 3-2 and 7-1 wins over the Cougars.

In the first game, Etown fell behind 2-0 in the third inning. By the bottom of the seventh inning with one out and no one on base, the score was still 2-0 in Kean's favor. Etown second baseman and number eight hitter Jill Hull (Grantham, PA/Mechanicsburg) reached first base on an error by Kean's center fielder. Ninth batter Tara VanEtten (Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) followed with a single, moving Hull to second base.

Etown's leadoff hitter, Jess Robinson (McSherrystown, PA/Delone Catholic) followed with a double, sending Hull home and VanEtten to third base. The bases were loaded when the next batter, Kristin Lezinski (Olyphant, PA/Lakeland) reached via a muffed ball by Kean's third baseman. Etown's next at-bat resulted in the inning's second out with no one scoring. Jenn Zemba (Library, PA/South Park) followed with a single that drove home both VanEtten and, winning the game.

Etown pitcher Michelle Morris (Conyngham, PA/Hazleton) got her seventh win of the season, giving up two runs and five hits while striking out ten in seven innings of work.

In the second game, Etown exploded for five runs in the first inning, added one more in the third inning, and scored another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The game was called on account of darkness after the fifth inning.

Pam Pike (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) got the win in the second game, improving to 4-2 overall this season. Kristyn Race (Dallas, PA/Dallas) went two-for-two at the plate with a double, scoring one run and driving in another. Zemba was two-for-three with a double, a run scored and an RBI, and Erin Malone (Orwigsburg, PA/Blue Mountain) batted two-for-three with a double and one run driven in.

Etown returns to action on the road Saturday, March 23 in a doubleheader against Richard Stockton. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
