Juniata Sweeps Etown 1-0 and 9-3 in Blue Jays' Home Opener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown dropped to 1-13-1 overall and 0-4 in the Commonwealth Conference after getting swept by Juniata College 1-0 and 9-3 in the Blue Jays' home opening doubleheader.

In the first game, Etown pitcher Alex Lee (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) got the loss despite allowing only one unearned run and just four hits, three of which came on bunts, in the seven inning complete game. Lee also struck out six Juniata batters. Juniata pitcher Kim Stoia (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills) got the win by firing a two-hitter in the opening game.

The only run of the first game was scored by the visiting Eagles in the top of the third inning as Kim Wagner (Middletown, PA/Middletown) reached first on a two out bunt single, stole second, and was moved to third on a bunt single by Renae Hobbs (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union). Wagner then scored on an Etown passed ball.

Kelli Thon (Victor, NY/Victor Central) hit 1-for-3 with a stolen base in the first game for Etown, and Lauren Dressler (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) batted 1-for-2 with a double for the Blue Jays.

In the second game, Juniata scored four runs in the top of the first inning, and the Eagles added one more run in each of the next three innings. Juniata also scored twice in the top of the sixth. Etown scored two runs in the bottom of the third as Thon hit a one-out bunt single, stole second, and moved to third on an Allison McMullen (Breinigsville, PA/Parkland) single. McMullen then stole second as well, and both Thon and McMullen were driven in by a Kelly Johnson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) single. Etown scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth when Johnson led off with a double and was replaced by pinch runner Megan Ottey (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) who scored on an Abbie Merrifield (York, PA/Dallastown) single with two outs.

Thon went 2-for-4 with a runs scored and a stolen base for Etown in the second game, and Johnson hit 3-for-3 with a walk and a double and two runs batted in.

Etown will return to action at home Wednesday, April 6 in a non-conference doubleheader against King's College (Pa.) at 3:00 p.m.
