ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE SOFTBALL Elizabethtown Sweeps Albright in Conference Opener, 2-0 and 5-4, Blue Jays’ Five-Game Win Streak Longest Since 2002 READING, Pa. --- Elizabethtown Collegeimproved to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the Commonwealth Conference Wednesday with a conference-opening sweep of Albright College on the road. The Blue Jays won the first game 2-0 and the second game 5-4 to stretch their current winning streak to five games, the team’s longest since 2002.
Elizabethtown pitcher Alex Lee (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) tossed a pair of complete game victories to improve to 6-2 on the season. In the first game, she struck out eight Albright batters and spread nine hits and one walk over seven innings in the shutout effort. In the second game, she struck out four batters and allowed six hits and five walks in seven innings. In the first game, Elizabethtown scored one run in the top of the fourth and one run in the sixth to win. In the second game, Albright took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and extended it to 4-0 on a three-run home run in the bottom of the third. The Blue Jays rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth and two runs in the top of the seventh to snatch the victory.
In the opening game, Kelli Thon (Victor, NY/Victor Central) batted 3-for-4 for Etown, and Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area) hit 1-for-4 with a double. Sarah Church ( Aston, PA/Sun Valley) hit 1-for-3 with a run scored, and Melissa Martin (Parsippany, NJ/DePaul Catholic) went 2-for-3 at the plate. Ryan Allard (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) drove in Elizabethtown’s first run of the game. In the second game, Thon hit 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Marian Guzik (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield Area) went 3-for-4 with a run and one RBI at the plate for Etown. Tanner batted 1-for-3 with a three-RBI triple in the fifth inning. Abbie Merrifield (York, PA/Dallastown) was 2-for-4, and Allard hit 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Elizabethtown will return to action at home Saturday, March 17 in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against Commonwealth Conference rival Messiah College.
