Elizabethtown Splits Doubleheader with F&M, Falls 8-1 in First Game, Wins Second Game 3-0

LANCASTER, Pa. --- Playing for the first time in 13 days, Elizabethtown College split a non-conference road doubleheader with Franklin & Marshall College Tuesday. The Blue Jays’ record now stands at 7-5 overall with the split, while Franklin & Marshall is now 4-12 overall.

Etown pitcher Alex Lee (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) started and completed both games for the Blue Jays. After giving up eight hits and eight runs, only two of which were earned, in the first game, she bounced back to pitch a four-hit shutout in the second game en route to improving to 7-3 on the season. She struck out five batters in the first game and three in the second.

In the first game, Elizabethtown scored one run in the top of the fifth inning. Kelli Thon (Victor, NY/Victor Central) bunted to lead off and reached base on an error. Marian Guzik (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield Area) followed with a single, and Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area) drove Thon home as she hit a grounder to third and advanced to second on a throwing error.

Thon batted 1-for-4 in the first game to extend her hitting streak, which dated back to April 25, 2006, to 16 games. However, she was held hitless in the second game, thereby ending her streak. Abbie Merrifield (York, PA/Dallastown) and Megan Ottey (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) each went 1-for-2 with a walk in the first game for Etown.

In the second game, Elizabethtown scored one run in the top of the third and two more in the top of the sixth inning. Tanner hit a one-out double in the top of the third, and she moved to third base on a single by Holly Martin (Parsippany, NJ/DePaul Catholic). A Sarah Church (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) sacrifice drove home Tanner. In the sixth inning, Melissa Keeler (Hazleton, PA/Bishop Hafey) led off and was hit by a pitch. Ryan Allard (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) followed with a single, and a Guzik sacrifice moved the pair up to second and third. Tanner then hit a two-out double to drive both home.

Tanner batted 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBI in the second game. Martin went 2-for-4 at the plate, as did Lauren Dressler (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita). Lauren Hoover (Reading, PA/Oley Valley) batted 3-for-4 for Elizabethtown in the second game.

Elizabethtown will return to action on the road Thursday, March 29 at Gettysburg College in a 2:30 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
