ETOWN OPENS SEASON AT DREW, WOMEN WIN 111.5-85.5, MEN LOSE 100-78

MADISON, N.J. --- Elizabethtown began the 2000-01 swimming season by splitting its results at Drew Wednesday. The Etown women's team won 111.5-85.5 while capturing first place in every non-exhibition event, and the Blue Jay men fell to Drew 100-78.

The women's team jumped out to a 13-4 lead after the meet's first event, the 200 yard medley relay, and never looked back. In the first individual event, the 1000 yard freestyle, freshman Joanna Hyde (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland) won the first race of her collegiate career in 11:58.23. Etown's Brooke Knepper (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport) captured first place in all three events in which she participated, winning the 200 free in 2:04.39, the 100 butterfly in 1:04.50 and the 500 free in 5:40.05.

Lindsay Texter (Lititz, PA/Warwick) began her senior year for Etown with a bang, winning the 400 individual medley in 4:57.74, the third-fastest known time in that event in the history of the program. Texter also won the 100 free in 57:47. Stacey Benton (Duncansville, PA/Hollidaysburg) also won a pair of events for the Blue Jays, finishing first in the 50 free in 26.95 and the 100 backstroke in 1:06.56.

Paul Contino (Flourtown, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) starred for the Etown men, winning three events. He captured the 400 individual medley in 4:43.49, the 100 butterfly in 58.82 and the 500 freestyle in 5:27.25. Jon Fortin (West Hartford, CT/William R. Hall) won the 100 breaststroke for the Blue Jays in 1:07.23, and freshman Scott English (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) captured the 50 freestyle.

Etown returns to action at home Saturday, November 11 against Dickinson. Meet time is 1:00 p.m., and it is Elizabethtown's only home meet of the fall semester.
