Etown Men Defeat Washington College 90-84, Etown Women Fall 131-74

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown's men's swimming team won its second meet of the year with a 90-84 win over Washington College (3-4), while the women's team fell to 3-6 overall with a 131-74 loss to Washington's 8-0 women's team.

The only event winner for the Etown women was Holly Gish (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle), who won both the 200 yard individual medley in 2:22.93 and the 100 yard backstroke in 1:06.80.

In the men's meet, Etown (2-6) started off with an 11-4 lead by winning the 200 medley relay. Etown's team of Garth Semple (Marietta, OH/Mercersburg Academy), Casey Moore (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson), Michael Hyde (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland), and Scott English (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) won the event in 1:48.52.

However, by the conclusion of the 200 freestyle, Etown had fallen behind, 24-18, to Washington. Etown regained the lead, 33-28, in the 50 freestyle when English and Semple took first and second with times of 22.95 and 24.07, respectively. Etown stretched its lead to 44-35 when Moore won the 200 individual medley in 2:02.29.

Washington cut Etown lead to one, 49-48, by sweeping first and second in the 100 butterfly. Etown struck back by taking first, second, and third in the 100 freestyle to go up 65-50. English won that event in 52.91 seconds.

A Semple victory in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.13 increased Etown's lead to 74-57, and the Blue Jays extended their lead to 83-64 when Moore won the 500 freestyle in 4:58.08. By the end of the 100 breaststroke, Etown held an insurmountable 90-73 lead with just one event to go, the 200 freestyle relay, which Washington swam uncontested.

Elizabethtown returns to action Wednesday, January 16 as host of Middle Atlantic Conference rival Drew. Meet time is 6:00 p.m.
