ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE SWIMMING Etown Sweeps Ursinus, Women Win 119-83, Men Win 90-75, Scott English Wins Both 1000 and 50 Yard Freestyle Events ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College's women's swimming team improved to 3-7 in dual meets, and the Etown men's swimming team improved to 2-7 in 2002-03, with a pair of wins at home over Ursinus Wednesday night. The Etown women won 119-83, while the men won 90-75. In the women's meet, Etown fell behind Ursinus 20-15 through the first two events, tied the score at 27-27 in the third event, the 200 yard freestyle, and fell behind again, 37-36, to Ursinus after the next event, the 50 yard freestyle. Etown took a 50-42 lead in the fifth event of the night, the 200 yard individual medley. Three events later, Ursinus regained a 75-74 lead following the 100 yard backstroke. Elizabethtown put Ursinus away in the final three events, sweeping first, second and third place in the 500 yard freestyle and the 100 yard breaststroke, and taking first and second place in the 200 yard freestyle relay. Freshman Stacey Limbach (Harleysville, PA) won both the 200 yard individual medley and the 500 yard freestyle for Etown with respective times of 2:30.41 and 5:53.04. Holly Gish (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) captured the 200 yard freestyle in 2:03.20 for the Blue Jays, and Joanna Hyde (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland) won the 1000 yard freestyle in 12:08.02. Christina Blaha (Killingworth, CT/Haddam-Killingworth) won the 100 yard breaststroke for Etown in 1:10.90. In the men's events, Etown overcame a 15-9 deficit through the first two events to take a 21-19 lead after the third event, the 200 yard freestyle. From there, the Blue Jays held the lead for the rest of the meet, going up by as many as 16 points at one point. Etown won all but three of the events it entered, with Brian Thudium (Harleysville, PA), Scott English (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) and Casey Moore (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) leading the way with two individual victories each. Thudium won the 200 yard freestyle in 1:58.88 and the 500 yard freestyle in 5:30.09. English put together an especially impressive performance, winning both the longest distance event of the meet, the 1000 yard freestyle, in 11:47.17, and the shortest sprint event, the 50 yard freestyle, in 22.81 seconds. English, who is normally strictly a sprinter, had very little time to recover from the 1000 yard freestyle with the 50 yard freestyle coming just two events later. Moore won the 200 yard individual medley in 2:04.12 and the 100 yard freestyle in 48.90 seconds. Elizabethtown's women's swimming team returns to action on the road Saturday, January 25 at Juniata in a 1:00 p.m. meet. The Etown men won't compete again until Tuesday, January 28, when both the Blue Jay men and women host Susquehanna in a 6:00 p.m. meet. At Elizabethtown, Pa. |
