The Etown men won 83-31, and the Etown women won 106-70. It was the first dual meet win of the season for the Elizabethtown men. Many of Elizabethtown’s times in the meet were a little slower than prior to Winter Break, as the Blue Jays have recently returned from their annual intensive training trip. In the men’s events, Etown began by winning the 200 yard medley relay as the team of Ryan Schutz (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts), Peter Matlack (Burlington, NJ/Holy Cross), Kevin O’Hara (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) and Ronald Harkness (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan) posted a time of 2:04.05. Brian Thudium (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) followed with a win in the 200 freestyle in 2:02.64, and Darren DiObilda (Coatesville, PA/Malvern Prep.) won the 50 freestyle for Etown in 24.10 seconds. He also won the 100 butterfly in 58.78 seconds. Geoff Betz (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) won the 100 freestyle in 56.75 seconds, and Jason Rose (Ft. Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) won the 100 backstroke in 1:02.39 for Etown. The 500 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay were only contested as exhibitions, and the top times in those events were 5:42.64 by Thudium and 1:48.01 by the team of Schutz, Harkness, Julian Harper (New York, NY/Fordham Prep.) and DiObilda, respectively. Also, Etown only swam exhibition entries in the 100 breaststroke, but the Blue Jays’ Daniel McGuigan (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) actually posted the race’s fastest time of 1:07.92. On the women’s side, Etown opened the meet with a win for the 200 medley relay team of Rachel Halton (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus), Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown), Keeley Trumbo (Chester Springs, PA/Great Valley) and Jenny Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) in 2:00.40. Laura Quigley (Yardley, PA/Pennsburg) then followed with a win in the 1000 freestyle in 12:15.62 for Etown. Later in the meet, Quigley also posted the fastest time in the 500 freestyle in 6:04.46, although she swam as an exhibition entry. Trumbo won both the 100 butterfly in 1:03.84 and the 200 freestyle in 2:09.33, and Brizek won both the 200 individual medley in 2:23.18 and the 100 backstroke in 1:06.79. Geiger won the 50 freestyle in 27.05 seconds for Etown, and she posted the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.44, although she swam that race as an exhibition entry. The 200 freestyle relay was run only as an exhibition, and the fastest team in that race was Etown’s squad of Trish Lemon (Collegeville, PA/Villa Maria Academy), Lindsay Kollmeier (Sewell, NJ/Ursuline Academy, DE), Quigley and Tatiana Roll (North Plainfield, NJ/Immaculata) in 1:59.47.
