ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE SWIMMING Elizabethtown Men & Women’s Swimming Teams Finish Sixth at MAC Championships; Blue Jays Tally Three Medals, 15 Second Team All-MAC Finishes
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College’s men's and women's swimming teams both finished in sixth place out of ten teams in the three day-long Middle Atlantic Conference Championships in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Sunday night. The Etown women totaled 257 points, and the Etown men tallied 204 points. Albright won the women's side with 723 points, and Widener won the men's side with 817 points. The Blue Jays picked up their third conference medal of the championships Sunday night when first-year student Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) won her second silver medal of the meet. She finished second in the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:31.81, her best time of the season.
Two Blue Jays earned conference medals in Saturday's competition. Geiger picked up her first silver medal then by finishing second in the 100 yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 1:09.39. In the 100 yard butterfly, junior Keeley Trumbo (Chester Springs, PA/Great Valley) earned a bronze medal by finishing third in 1:01.81 Saturday. Additionally, 15 Etown entries -- eight on the women's side and seven on the men's side -- earned Second Team All-MAC honors by finishing between fourth and sixth in their respective events.
On the women’s side Sunday, Trumbo finished fifth in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:17.32, her best time of the season. Also earning a Second Team All-MAC spot Sunday was Etown’s 400 yard freestyle relay team of Jenny Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser), Tara Ison (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield), Geiger and Trumbo, which finished sixth in 3:52.67, another team season best time. On Saturday, the 200 yard medley relay team of Rachel Halton (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus), Geiger, Trumbo and Brizek finished fifth in 1:56.04, a new season-low time, to earn Second Team All-MAC status. Brizek also placed sixth in the 400 individual medley Saturday in a season-best time of 4:58.11 to earn a spot on the All-MAC Second Team in that event as well. The 800 yard freestyle relay team of Brizek, Laura Quigley (Yardley, PA/Pennsburg), Lindsay Kollmeier (Sewell, NJ/Ursuline Academy, DE) and Trumbo placed fifth in 8:33.11. On Friday, Brizek placed fourth the conference in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:17.45, her best of the season. The 400 medley relay team of Halton, Geiger, Trumbo and Brizek placed fifth in 4:13.38, also a new season low. The 200 freestyle relay team of Geiger, Trish Lemon (Collegeville, PA/Villa Maria Academy), Ison and Trumbo placed sixth in 1:47.06, another season low.
On the men’s side Sunday, Etown had two Second Team All-MAC finishers in the 200 yard breaststroke, where Brian Thudium (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) finished fifth and Daniel McGuigan (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) placed sixth in respective final times of 2:20.41 and 2:20.47. Also earning a spot on the second team Sunday was Etown 400 yard freestyle relay team of Kevin O’Hara (Collegeville, PA/Methacton), Geoff Betz (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley), Thudium and Darren DiObilda (Coatesville, PA/Malvern Prep.), which placed sixth in 3:27.40, a new season low by nearly 10 seconds. On Saturday, the 200 yard medley relay team of Jason Rose (Ft. Washington, PA/Upper Dublin), Thudium, DiObilda and O'Hara finished sixth in 1:44.45 to earn Second Team All-MAC status. Also, the 800 freestyle relay team of Rose, McGuigan, Betz and Thudium finished sixth in 7:47.51 Saturday. On Friday, the 400 yard medley relay team of Rose, Thudium, DiObilda and Betz placed fifth in 3:48.52, a new season low by nearly 10 seconds. The 200 freestyle relay team of O'Hara, Rose, Betz and Thudium placed sixth in 1:32.96, another new season low. at Wilkes-Barre, Pa. |
