ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE SWIMMING Elizabethtown Produces 13 Medals, Three Program Records at Middle Atlantic Conference Championships; Christopher Miller Provisionally Qualifies for NCAA Division III Championships in Two Events, Wins David B. Eavenson Award WILKES-BARRE , Pa. --- At the 2007 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships at the Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Catholic Youth Center, Elizabethtown College swimmers racked up 13 conference medals, three program records and two NCAA Division III Championship provisional qualifying performances. In the team scoring, the Elizabethtown men placed fifth out of ten teams with a score of 324, and the Elizabethtown women placed sixth out of 11 teams with a score of 344. On the women’s side, Elizabethtown produced three medals Friday. In the 50 yard freestyle, first-year student Lindsay Riley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) captured a bronze medal with a third-place final finish of 25.69 seconds. Two relay teams also earned bronze medals. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the team of senior Keeley Trumbo (Chester Springs, PA/Great Valley), first-year student Kara Geiger (Zionsville, PA/Emmaus), sophomore Jenny Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) and Riley finished third in 1:43.30. In the 400 medley relay, the team of Brizek, Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown), Trumbo and Kara Geiger placed third in 4:12.71. The Blue Jay women earned three more medals on Saturday. In the 100 yard butterfly, Trumbo earned a bronze with a third place finish in 1:01.34. In the 100 yard breaststroke, Gretchen Geiger took home a silver medal with a second place finish in 1:08.81. Also picking up a silver medal, the 200 yard medley relay team of Brizek, Gretchen Geiger, Trumbo and Riley finished second in 1:55.23. Additionally, the 800 yard freestyle relay team of Trumbo, Christine Nutini (Newark, DE/Sanford), Gretchen Geiger and Kara Geiger earned Second Team All-MAC status by placing fifth in 8:31.48. On Sunday, the Elizabethtown women earned two more conference medals. Gretchen Geiger placed second in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:27.75 to earn a silver medal, and the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Trumbo, Brizek, Kara Geiger and Riley earned a bronze medal by placing third in 3:47.73. The Blue Jays also picked up two more Second Team All-MAC performances Sunday, as Riley placed fifth in the 100 freestyle in 56.74 seconds, and as Trumbo placed fourth in the 200 yard butterfly in 2:17.39. On the men’s side, Elizabethtown took two medals and had one Second Team All-MAC performance in Friday’s finals. In the 500 freestyle, sophomore Christopher Miller (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) became the Elizabethtown men’s team’s first MAC Champion since 2003 with an event-winning final time of 4:47.49. In the 400 yard medley relay, the Etown group of Miller, first-year student Tim Donahue (Hatfield, PA), junior Darren DiObilda (Coatesville, PA/Malvern Prep.) and first-year student Matthew Drob (Strasburg, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) brought home a silver medal with a second place finish of 3:37.26. Also, the 200 freestyle relay team of DiObilda, Jason Rose (Ft. Washington, PA/Upper Dublin), Geoff Betz (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) and Drob placed fifth in 1:31.64. By placing between fourth and sixth, the group earned Second Team All-MAC status. The Elizabethtown men earned two more medals on Saturday. In the 100 yard backstroke, Miller not only won a gold medal and the MAC title in the event with a winning final time of 52.52 seconds, he also shattered the 13 year-old program record in the event of 53.59 seconds set by Stephen Fowler in the 1993-94 season. That time also provisionally qualified Miller for the NCAA Division III Championships, as it bested the provisional standard of 52.79 seconds and currently ranks him 13th in the country in the event. The men’s 200 yard medley relay team of Miller, Donahue, DiObilda and Drob earned a silver medal with a second place finish of 1:38.45. That time also broke the old program record of 1:39.95 set during the 1995-96 season. The Blue Jays also had two Second Team All-MAC finishes Saturday. Donahue placed fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:01.41, and the 800 freestyle relay team of Miller, Rose, Betz and Daniel McGuigan (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) placed sixth in 7:38.06. On Sunday, the Etown men earned another gold medal as Miller won the 200 yard backstroke in 1:53.78. That time bested the old Elizabethtown record of 1:58.75 set in 1993-94, and it provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Division III Championships in that event as well, besting the provisional qualifying standard of 1:54.69. Miller is now ranked 10th in the nation in the 200 yard backstroke. The Blue Jay men also got three more Second Team All-MAC performances Sunday, with Donahue placing fourth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.47, McGuigan placing sixth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:21.34, and the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Miller, Betz, DiObilda and Drob placing fifth in 3:21.47. Miller also earned the David B. Eavensen Award as the Most Outstanding Male Swimmer of the meet. at Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Women’s Team Scores: 1. Albright 734; 2. Scranton 648; 3. Widener 379.5; 4.
