Scranton Wins Blue Jay Classic Tournament, Etown Finishes Second

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown finished second in the Blue Jay Classic Tournament Saturday, losing in the championship match of the eight team tournament to the University of Scranton, 3-1. Earlier in the day, Etown defeated Kean (NJ) 3-2. Etown won a 3-0 match in the first round over Neumann Friday.

Elizabethtown (5-7) advanced to the championship match after defeating Kean (9-4) in a come-from-behind, 24-30, 30-24, 28-30, 30-25, 15-13, five game marathon.

Tess Romiti (Ellicott City, MD/Seton Keough) dished out 45 assists for the Blue Jays against Kean, the eleventh-highest total in program history. Emily Morris (Canton, PA/Canton) had a team high 29 digs and 16 kills, and Ashley Wade (Duncansville, PA/Hollidaysburg) punched out 16 kills as well.

Dawn Johns (Baltimore, MD/Lansdowne) had 14 kills, 19 digs, and nine blocks, including eight solo, against Kean, and Sarah Klunk (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) added 19 digs as well as five service aces.

Etown fell to Scranton (9-5) 30-18 in the first game. The Blue Jays struck back in the second, winning 30-27, but Scranton took the third and fourth games, 30-26 and 30-16, respectively.

Romiti had 35 assists against Scranton, and Morris led the team with 11 kills. Klunk led the Blue Jays with 23 digs, and Wade had eight blocks.

In other action, Susquehanna (17-2) finished third and saw its 16 match winning streak halted by Scranton. Kean placed fourth in the tournament, Neumann (10-3) placed fifth, Goucher (3-14) placed sixth, Mt. Aloysius (9-6) finished seventh, and Ramapo (1-4) finished fifth.
