ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL

Meghan Gowens Sets Service Ace Record, Dawn Johns and Emily Morris Move up in Program Record Books, as Elizabethtown Finishes 2nd at Goucher Invite

BALTIMORE, Md. --- Saturday proved to be a historic day for the Elizabethtown College volleyball program as the Blue Jays finished second at the Goucher Invitational, defeating Kean 3-1 and Goucher 3-0 before losing to Washington & Lee 3-0. The Etown program record for most service aces in a match fell in the opener against Kean, while two Elizabethtown players reached career milestones in several statistical categories.

In Etown's 30-7, 29-31, 30-14, 30-23 win over Kean, Etown freshman Meghan Gowens (Pensacola, FL/B.T. Washington) totaled 11 service aces, breaking the old program record of 10 in a single match set by Sarah Klunk '02 in 1998. Gowens also led the team with nine kills in that match, and Emily Morris (Canton, PA/Canton) led the team with 19 digs.

Morris' 19 digs against Kean boosted her career total to 1,180, moving her into second place on Elizabethtown's all-time list. By the end of the day's three matches, Morris' career dig total stood at 1,201. The Elizbethtown program record for most digs in a career stands at 1,440, and since Morris is only a junior, the chances that she would eventually break the record look good.

Also against Kean, senior Dawn Johns (Baltimore, MD/Lansdowne) had eight kills to become just the eighth player in the 24-year history of the Etown volleyball program to total 800 or more kills in a career. Playing at Goucher College, which is located in Baltimore, she had the privilege of reaching the milestone in her hometown. By the end of the day, Johns had a career total of 816 kills, ranking her seventh on Elizabethtown's all-time list.

In addition, Morris' career kill total stood at 793 at the conclusion of the day, meaning that she will soon join Johns at the 800 kill milestone.

In Etown's second match of the day, the Blue Jays downed host Goucher 30-25, 30-15, 30-19. Morris and Gowens each led the team in kills with seven, while Johns led the team with three services aces, and Gowens held the team lead in digs with 12.

After two wins, Elizabethtown advanced to the tournament championship match against Washington & Lee, losing a very close 32-30, 30-17, 34-32 match. Ashley Wade (Duncansville, PA/Hollidaysburg) led the Blue Jays with 10 kills, and Dee Selby (York, PA/Spring Grove) led the team with seven blocks. Morris had 15 digs to pace the team.

Elizabethtown's record now stands at 9-11 overall following the tournament, and the Blue Jays will return to action on the road against Commonwealth Conference rival Widener Wednesday, October 9 in a 7:00 p.m. match.
