Etown Wins Scranton Tournament Title, Downs Dickinson 3-0 and Scranton 3-1 in Championship Rounds; Three Blue Jay First-Years on All-Tournament Team

SCRANTON, Pa. --- Elizabethtown captured the title of the University of Scranton's tournament Saturday as it defeated Dickinson 3-0 in the tournament semifinals and downed host Scranton 3-1 in the championship. Additionally, three Blue Jays, all of them first-year students, were named to the all-tournament team. They were middle hitter Kelly Downs (Airville, PA/Red Lion), setter Stacey Wasserman (Upperco, MD/Owings Mills) and outside hitter Ashley Whitmarsh (New Castle, DE/Padua Academy).

Etown downed Dickinson by game scores of 30-18, 30-26, 30-18. Whitmarsh led Etown in kills with 13 and service aces with four, and Wasserman led the Blue Jays in digs (13) and assists (39). Downs led the Blue Jays in blocks with five while whacking ten kills. Also, junior Meghan Gowens (Pensacola, FL/B.T. Washington) had 12 kills and nine digs in the match.

Against Scranton, a 25-30, 30-26, 30-22, 30-26 win for Etown, Whitmarsh again had the team lead in kills with 16, and she posted eight digs and tied for the team lead in service aces with four. Wasserman led the team in assists with 42, had six kills, 17 digs, four blocks, and tied for the team lead in aces with four. Downs posted a team high of eight blocks and had 11 kills. Gowens led the Blue Jays with 19 digs, and she had 14 kills. Senior defensive specialist Jamie Hudzik (Pittsburgh, PA/Seton-La Salle) had 13 digs in the tournament championship match.

In Etown's earlier matches Friday, the Blue Jays defeated Haverford 3-0 and DeSales 3-0.

Elizabethtown, which now possesses an 8-3 overall record, will return to action on the road Wednesday, September 22 against Commonwealth Conference rival Albright College at 7:00 p.m.
