Elizabethtown Places Third at Richard Stockton Mizuno Classic; Stacey Wasserman Passes 1000 Career Assist Mark

POMONA, N.J. --- Elizabethtown began its 2005 season with a 1-1 record Saturday by placing third at the Richard Stockton Mizuno Classic Saturday. Etown fell to host Richard Stockton in the first round 30-14, 30-22, 30-21, and the Blue Jays rallied from a two game deficit to defeat Gwynedd-Mercy 20-30, 28-30, 30-20, 30-24, 18-16 in the consolation match.

Against Richard Stockton, Kelly Downs (Airville, PA/Red Lion) led Etown in kills with eight, and Ashley Whitmarsh (New Castle, DE/ Padua Academy) added seven kills.

Against Gwynedd-Mercy, Dee Selby (York, PA/Spring Grove) led Etown in kills with 12. Downs and Whitmarsh each added 11 kills, and Downsled the team in blocks with four.

Stacey Wasserman (Upperco, MD/Owings Mills) tallied 71 assists over the course of the two matches to bring the Etown sophomore’s career total to 1,016. In a season and a day of collegiate competition, she has become only the eighth Blue Jay on record to total 1,000 or more assists.

Etown will return to action at Franklin & Marshall in a 7:00 p.m. road match Tuesday, September 6.
