ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL Elizabethtown Beats Southern Virginia 3-2, Falls to Maryville (TN) 3-1, on First Day of Washington & Lee Invitational LEXINGTON, Va. --- Elizabethtown's record now stands at 17-9 after splitting its first day's results at the Washington & Lee University Invitational Friday evening. The Blue Jays defeated Southern Virginia University 3-2 in their opening match of the day and fell to Maryville College (TN) 3-1 in the nightcap. Etown defeated Southern Virginia (15-7) by game scores of 30-23, 28-30, 30-27, 28-30, 15-12. In that match, Kelly Downs (Airville, PA/Red Lion) posted a team season-best total of 23 kills, and Meghan Gowens (Pensacola, FL/B.T. Washington) and Ashley Whitmarsh (New Castle, DE/Padua Academy) added 14 and 12 kills, respectively, to the Blue Jay offense. Setter Stacey Wasserman (Upperco, MD/Owings Mills) had a season-best total of 53 assists for Etown, and Melissa Maioriello (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) and Kate Scanlan (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) led Etown in digs with 13 each. Etown's loss to Maryville (20-12) came by game scores of 25-30, 31-29, 31-29, 30-20. In that match, Downs had 18 kills and Whitmarsh had 13 kills. Scanlan again led the team in digs with 12, and Wasserman had 37 assists and eight digs. The Washington & Lee Invitational will continue Saturday, October 22. Elizabethtown Coll. def.
