ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL Elizabethtown Wins 2006 Mizuno Classic to Open Season; Blue Jays Defeat McDaniel 3-0, Down Richard Stockton 3-1 ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College opened its 2006 season at home Saturday by winning the Mizuno Classic, defeating McDaniel College 30-16, 30-24, 30-22 and beating Richard Stockton College 30-27, 31-29, 26-30, 30-23 in the process. The Blue Jays are now 2-0 overall, while Richard Stockton and McDaniel’s records both stand at 1-1. McDaniel defeated Pitt-Bradford 30-20, 30-25, 30-27, and Richard Stockton defeated Pitt-Bradford 30-20, 30-27, 30-19 in the day’s other two matches.
Elizabethtown posted its win over McDaniel, and Richard Stockton defeated Pitt-Bradford, in the day’s opening round. Against McDaniel, junior Kelly Downs (Airville, PA/Red Lion) led Elizabethtown in kills with 13 and had a match-high total of three blocks. Senior libero Kate Scanlan (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) led Elizabethtown in digs with 30, the 11th-highest single match total in the history of the program. First-year student Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area) added 12 kills, 10 digs and two blocks for the Blue Jays in her collegiate debut. Junior setter Stacey Wasserman (Uppero, MD/Owings Mills) paced the Blue Jays in aces with three and in assists with 36, and she totaled 13 digs in the match. In the Blue Jays’ tournament championship match win over Richard Stockton, Scanlan again led Etown in digs with 23, and Wasserman again led Etown in aces with five and assists with 48. She also added 14 digs and four blocks. Junior Ashley Whitmarsh (New Castle, DE/Padua Academy) paced Elizabethtown in kills with 16, and she had 13 digs. Downs had 14 kills and a match-high total of eight blocks, while Tanner ended up with 12 kills and 12 digs. With 53 digs on the day, Scanlan boosted her career total to 765 to move into tenth place on Elizabethtown’s all-time list. Wasserman moved into fifth place on the Blue Jay’s career list in assists as she upped her career total to 2,114. Elizabethtown will return to action on the road Tuesday, September 5 in a 7:00 p.m. match against NCAA Division II member Shippensburg University. Elizabethtown Coll. def.
