Elizabethtown Defeats Gettysburg 3-2, Downs Seton Hill 3-2, at Gettysburg Battlefield Classic; Blue Jays Get First Win over Bullets since 1992; Downs and Tanner Named to All-Tournament Team

GETTYSBURG, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College won both of its matches in come-from-behind fashion on the final day of the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic Saturday, downing Gettysburg 26-30, 22-30, 30-25, 30-28, 15-9 in five games, and defeating Seton Hill University 25-30, 28-30, 32-30, 30-20, 15-12. Elizabethtown went 4-0 over the course of the two-day tournament, and the Blue Jays’ record now stands at 6-1 overall.

In the first match Saturday, Elizabethtown rallied from a two-game deficit to defeat the Bullets 3-2. It was only Elizabethtown’s eighth win all-time in the 28 meetings between the two teams, and it was the first Elizabethtown win over Gettysburg since 1992.

Elizabethtown again rallied from a two-game deficit to defeat Seton Hill 3-2 as well Saturday. Statistics from Saturday’s matches are currently unavailable.

Earlier in the tournament Friday, Elizabethtown defeated Johns Hopkins 3-0 and Richard Stockton 3-1.

Two Elizabethtown players, first-year outside hitter Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area) and junior middle hitter Kelly Downs (Airville, PA/Red Lion), were named to the All-Tournament Team. Over the course of the four matches Friday and Saturday, Downs totaled 46 kills, a .319 hitting percentage, four aces, 94.6% accuracy in serving, six blocks and six digs. Tanner tallied 42 kills, a .170 hitting percentage, two aces, 92.0% accuracy in serving, 30 digs and four blocks.

Elizabethtown will return to action on the road Tuesday, September 12 in its Commonwealth Conference opener against Moravian at 7:00 p.m.
