Elizabethtown Wins Commonwealth Conference Opener, Defeats Moravian 3-1 to Improve to 7-1 Overall

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College shook off a rusty first game to defeat Commonwealth Conference rival Moravian College in four games, 20-30, 34-32, 30-22, 30-21 to improve to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. It was the Blue Jays’ third comeback win in a row.

In addition to 44 assists, Stacey Wasserman '08 had nine kills.

The Etown offense continually gathered steam as the match went on, as the Blue Jays followed a -.079 hitting percentage in the first game with a .279 performance in the second game, a .351 hitting percentage in the third game, and a .436 effort in the fourth game.

Kelly Downs (Airville, PA/Red Lion) led Etown in kills with 17, and she had a .438 hitting percentage and a team-high total of seven blocks. Ashley Whitmarsh (New Castle, DE/Padua Academy) had 15 kills and four blocks for the Blue Jays, and setter Stacey Wasserman (Upperco, MD/Owings Mills) hammered out nine kills with a .600 hitting percentage while tallying 44 assists. Libero Kate Scanlan (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) led Elizabethtown in digs with 19.

Elizabethtown will return to action on the road against NCAA Division II Millersville University at 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 15.
