Elizabethtown Blows Out Widener 3-0; Blue Jays Improve to 9-1, off to Best Start in 20 Years

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- With a 30-18, 30-22, 30-20 blowout home win over Commonwealth Conference rival Widener University Wednesday night, the Elizabethtown College volleyball team improved to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Blue Jays are now off to their best start through ten matches since 1986, when Elizabethtown went 45-10. Widener dropped to 6-7 overall and 0-1 in the conference with the loss.

Stacey Wasserman '08 had four aces and 26 assists.

Junior middle hitter Kelly Downs (Airville, PA/Red Lion) led the Elizabethtown offense with 12 kills and a .476 hitting percentage, and she had five blocks to lead the team as well. First-year student outside hitter Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area) added nine kills and had a .400 hitting percentage. Senior libero Kate Scanlan (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) totaled 14 digs to lead the Blue Jays. Junior setter Stacey Wasserman (Upperco, MD/Owings Mills) led Elizabethtown in service aces with four and assists with 26.

Elizabethtown will return to action as the host of its annual Blue Jay Classic Tournament, which begins at 3:00 p.m. Friday, September 22 and resumes at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, September 23. Elizabethtown will face Wilkes University at 7:00 p.m. Friday and Mitchell College at 9:00 p.m. Friday.
