Elizabethtown Sweeps Wilkes and Mitchell on First Day of Blue Jay Classic Tournament; Etown Totals 31 Service Aces in Two Matches

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College, which is off to its best start to a season in 20 years, continued to chainsaw its way through the 2006 campaign on the first day of its annual Blue Jay Classic tournament Friday night, blowing out Wilkes University 30-11, 30-21, 30-22 and taking down Mitchell College 30-6, 30-14, 30-18. Elizabethtown is now 11-1 overall.

In Etown’s first match of the night against Wilkes, Ashley Whitmarsh (New Castle, DE/Padua Academy) led the Blue Jays in kills with 11. Kayla Deats (Middlebury Center, PA/Wellsboro Area) added nine kills and led the team in blocks with three. Setter Stacey Wasserman (Upperco, MD/Owings Mills) totaled six service aces, 14 assists and nine digs in two games, while first-year setter Sheri Hihn (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) had 13 assists and two aces in two games. Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area) led Etown in digs with 12, and Corin Kidwell (Akron, PA/Ephrata Area) had 11 digs and three aces in two games. In all, Elizabethtown had 16 service aces against Wilkes.

Kayla Deats '10 had 16 kills and six blocks in two matches.

In the Blue Jays’ second match of the night against Mitchell, Megan Monahan (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg Area) cranked out a team high total of 12 kills. Libero Kate Scanlan (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) led Etown in digs with 17 and in aces with seven, and Wasserman had five aces, three blocks and 21 assists in two games. Hihn added 14 assists in one game, and Kathy Perry (Hockessin, DE/A.I. DuPont) had 12 digs and five kills. Deats totaled seven kills and three blocks. Elizabethtown also totaled 15 service aces against Mitchell.

Kate Scanlan '07 had seven aces and 17 digs against Mitchell.

The Blue Jay Classic will resume at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, September 23.
