ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL Scranton Wins Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic Tournament, Etown Runner-Up; Blue Jays’ Downs and Scanlan Named to All-Tournament Team; Wasserman Reaches 2,500 Career Assist Mark ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The University of Scranton captured the 2006 Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic tournament title Saturday by defeating host and runner-up Elizabethtown 31-29, 21-30, 30-16, 30-19 in the championship match. Scranton improved to 15-4 overall with the win, while Etown dropped to 12-2 overall with the loss. It was Elizabethtown’s first loss to an NCAA Division III team all season and ended a ten-match winning streak for the Blue Jays. Etown went 3-1 over the course of the two-day, eight-team tournament.
Two Elizabethtown players were named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the match. They were junior middle hitter Kelly Downs (Airville, PA/Red Lion) and senior libero Kate Scanlan (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley). Over the course of the four matches, Downshad 32 kills, a .379 hitting percentage, 11 blocks and eight digs in 12 games. Scanlan had ten service aces and 57 digs over the course of 13 games. In Elizabethtown’s first match of the day Saturday, a 30-25, 30-24, 13-30, 30-26 win over Wesleyan University, first-year outside hitter Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area) had a team-high total of 15 kills, and she had four blocks, eight digs and two aces. Scanlan led Etown in digs with 15 and had two aces, while junior setter Stacey Wasserman (Upperco, MD/Owings Mills) had 40 assists, three aces, seven digs and three blocks. Junior outside hitter Ashley Whitmarsh (New Castle, DE/Padua Academy) had 12 kills and seven digs, and first-year middle hitter Kayla Deats (Middlebury Center, PA/Wellsboro Area) had nine kills and led Etown in blocks with five.
Facing Scranton, Downs led Etown in kills with 16 and tied with Wasserman for the team lead in blocks with four. Wasserman also had 46 assists, two aces and 10 digs against Scranton. Deats added 13 kills, while Whitmarsh had 12 kills and nine digs. Scanlan again had 15 digs, and junior defensive specialist Kayla Kassis (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) added 13 digs. During the match against Scranton, Wasserman became just the third Blue Jay setter ever to reach the 2,500 career assist mark, and she moved into second place on Elizabethtown’s all-time list. Wasserman passed Kristen Maguire ’99, who totaled 2,531 assists in her career. Wasserman now has 2,543 assists in her career. Interestingly, Kristen Maguire’s sister, Deana (Maguire) Jespersen ’96, is also an alumna of Elizabethtown College and is the current head coach of Neumann College, which placed fourth out of the eight teams at the Blue Jay Classic this weekend. Also a setter, Deana Jespersen ranks seventh at Elizabethtown in career assists with 1,684. The Elizabethtown career assist record stands at 3,148 and is held by Cathy Lees ’88.
