Elizabethtown Defeats Lebanon Valley 3-0; Blue Jays Get First Win over LVC Since 1998

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- With a 30-26, 30-25, 30-27 home win over Lebanon Valley College Tuesday night, the Elizabethtown College volleyball team improved to 13-2 overall and 3-0 in the Commonwealth Conference, and the Blue Jays got their first win over LVC since 1998, snapping an eight-match losing streak to the Flying Dutchmen. Elizabethtown is off to its best start through 15 matches since 1986. Lebanon Valley dropped to 14-5 overall and 2-1 in the conference with the loss.

Ashley Whitmarsh '08 had 12 kills and 14 digs.

Over the course of the match, Lebanon Valley committed 32 attack errors against 21 for Etown. The Blue Jays also had 46 kills against 39 for Lebanon Valley. The Blue Jays made nine total blocks as a team, while Lebanon Valley had just three. Both teams’ defenses played strongly, with Elizabethtown totaling 74 digs and Lebanon Valley having 66 digs.

Ashley Whitmarsh (New Castle, DE/Padua Academy) led the Elizabethtown offense with 12 kills and just one error in 27 attacks for a .407 hitting percentage. She also had 14 digs, two blocks and one ace for the Blue Jays. Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/ Waynesboro Area) added 11 kills, 14 digs and two blocks, and Megan Monahan (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg Area) had 10 kills for Etown.

Kelly Downs (Airville, PA/Red Lion) led Elizabethtown in blocks with six, three of which were solo. Kate Scanlan (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) led Etown in digs with 21, and Kayla Kassis (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) had 13 digs. Stacey Wasserman (Upperco, MD/Owings Mills) led Etown in service aces with three and in assists with 33.

Elizabethtown will return to action on the road at York College ( Pa.) Saturday, September 30 for a pair of matches. Etown will face York at 11:00 a.m. and Lycoming College at 1:00 p.m.
