ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL Elizabethtown Improves to 18-2 Overall With 3-0 Wins over Wooster and Medaille on First Day of Carnegie Mellon Invitational
PITTSBURGH, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College extended its current winning streak to six matches and improved to 18-2 overall with a pair of 3-0 wins over The College of Wooster and Medaille College on the first day of the Carnegie Mellon University Invitational Friday night. Elizabethtown defeated Wooster 30-26, 30-20, 30-18, and Etown blew out Medaille 30-10, 30-15, 30-15. The Blue Jays currently possess their best record through 20 matches since 1986. Against Wooster (9-10), first-year outside hitter Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area) led Etown in kills with 10 and aces with two, and she had 11 digs. Junior middle hitter Kelly Downs (Airville, PA/Red Lion) added nine kills with a .318 hitting percentage and two blocks. Senior libero Kate Scanlan (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) led the Blue Jays in digs against Wooster with 24 and in aces with two, and junior setter Stacey Wasserman (Upperco, MD/Owings Mills) had 24 assists and eight digs.
Against Medaille (6-13), Elizabethtown as a team posted a blistering .429 hitting percentage for the match, including a .632 performance in the first game. The Blue Jays committed just eight attack errors in the entire match while cranking out 46 kills. Downs led Etown in kills with nine and had a .900 hitting percentage, while junior outside hitter Megan Monahan (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg Area) had eight kills and a .700 hitting percentage. Wasserman had 28 assists and led Etown in service aces with four, and Scanlan led Etown in digs again with 16. Junior outside hitter Ashley Whitmarsh (New Castle, DE/Padua Academy) had three aces and added seven kills. Scanlan now ranks in sixth place all-time at Elizabethtown in digs in a career with 1,054. Downs has moved into a tie for eighth place in career kills at Elizabethtown with 890, and she is in 10th place in career blocks with 345. Wasserman has moved into fifth place on Elizabethtown’s all-time list in career service aces with 185, and she ranks second all-time at Etown in assists with 2,738. The Carnegie Mellon Invitational will conclude Saturday, and Elizabethtown is scheduled to face nationally 17th-ranked Hiram College at 11:00 a.m. and tournament host Carnegie Mellon at 1:00 p.m. At Pittsburgh, Pa.
