Elizabethtown Edges Eastern 3-2, Downs Lycoming 3-0, on First Day of Eastern Extravaganza

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College defeated Eastern University in five games and Lycoming College in three games Friday evening to improve to 24-5 on the first day of the Eastern University Extravaganza and the penultimate day of the Blue Jays’ 2006 regular season. The Blue Jays rallied to defeat the host Eastern Eagles 19-30, 30-27, 20-30, 32-30, 15-6, and Elizabethtown blew out Lycoming 30-25, 30-18, 30-21 in the second match of the night. Eastern, which dropped to 20-10 overall with the loss, has reached the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division III tournament for the last three consecutive years and has competed in the NCAA tournament for each of the last seven consecutive years. Lycoming dropped to 16-12 with the loss.

First-year student outside hitter Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) led Etown in kills against Eastern with 22, the highest single-match total for a Blue Jay thus far this season, and she had 14 digs. Junior middle hitter Kelly Downs (Airville, PA/Red Lion) had nine kills and led Elizabethtown in blocks with seven and in service aces with three. Junior setter Stacey Wasserman (Upperco, MD/Owings Mills) totaled 47 assists, four kills, two aces and nine digs. Senior libero Kate Scanlan (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) led the Blue Jays in digs against Eastern with 22. First-year middle hitter Kayla Deats (Middlebury Center, PA/Wellsboro Area) had ten kills and four blocks.

Against Lycoming, junior outside hitter Ashley Whitmarsh (New Castle, DE/Padua Academy) led Elizabethtown in kills with 13, with no attack errors and a .464 hitting percentage. She also tied for the team lead in digs with 11. Junior outside hitter Megan Monahan (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg Area) had seven kills, no attack errors and a .636 hitting percentage. Scanlan tied for the team lead in digs with 11, and Tanner also had 11 digs. Downs led Etown in blocks with five and in aces with two. Wasserman had 30 assists and three blocks against Lycoming.

The Eastern Extravaganza will resume Saturday, with Elizabethtown facing Marymount University at 10:00 a.m. and Franklin & Marshall College at 12:00 p.m. The Blue Jays will host Moravian College in the opening round of the Commonwealth Conference playoffs, Wednesday, November 1 at 7:00 p.m.
