Elizabethtown Finishes Third at CNU Invitational

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --- The Elizabethtown College volleyball team finished third at the CNU Invitational on the campus of Christopher Newport University after splitting two matches on Saturday.

The Blue Jays (21-6 overall) lost 3-1 to eventual tournament champion Washington & Lee University (30-23, 30-21, 17-30, 32-30) before defeating Gallaudet University 3-2 (28-30, 30-22, 30-27, 25-30, 15-6) in the third-place match.

Against Washington & Lee, Elizabethtown was led by senior Kelly Downs (Airville, PA/Red Lion) who posted 13 kills and nine blocks. Senior Ashley Whitmarsh (New Castle, DE/Padua Academy) added 12 kills and sophomore Paige Tanner (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) had 10 kills and 19 digs.

Senior Stacey Wasserman (Upperco, MD/Owings Mills) distributed 37 assists and added 22 digs and seven blocks for the Blue Jays, while first-year student Amanda Ritchey (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) had 25 digs and senior Kayla Kassis (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) posted 24 digs.

Against Gallaudet, Downs finished with 22 kills and just one error in 49 attacks, while Tanner added 13 kills and 21 digs and Whitmarsh posted 10 kills. Wasserman handed out 53 assists and recorded 28 digs, while first-year student Allie Gold (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) had 21 digs in the victory.

Downs was named to the All-Tournament team after accumulating 70 kills and 26 blocks while hitting .380 in four games, with an average of 4.12 kills per game.
