ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Etown and Grove City Win on Last Day of Coaches vs. Cancer Blue Jay Classic, Cherrissa McCoy and Stephanie Scinto Make All-Tournament Team ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown edged out Washington & Jefferson (5-5) to improve to 3-6 overall with a 76-68 win in the final game of the 2002 Coaches vs. Cancer Blue Jay Classic at Thompson Gymnasium Saturday. In the day's first game, Grove City (5-6) routed Shenandoah (2-6) 82-44. Leading Elizabethtown's scoring efforts were guards Stephanie Scinto (Westwood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) and Cherrissa McCoy (Trevose, PA/Bensalem), each of whom made the All-Tournament Team, with 21 points and 18 points, respectively. Washington & Jefferson's All-Tournament Team member Shawndra McDonald led the Presidents with 33 points and six assists. Elizabethtown took the lead for the first time in the game with 11:47 remaining in the first half, 14-12, on a layup by Jennifer Roberts (Eagleville, PA/Methaction). At 2:31 remaining in the first half, Washington & Jefferson regained a 30-28 lead. After several flip-flops, Elizabethtown regained the lead 35 seconds before halftime on a Jessica Hollinshead (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) layup that sent the Blue Jays ahead 34-33. By halftime, Etown held a 37-35 lead. Washington and Jefferson tied the score early in the second half, but a three pointer by Scinto at 15:44 put the Blue Jays up, 44-41, and Elizabethtown held the lead for the rest of the game. By the middle of the second half, Elizabethtown built up a 14 point lead, but with one minute left in the game, the Presidents had pulled to within five. Six good free throws by Scinto, who went eight-for-eight from the charity stripe in the game, in the final 24 seconds sealed the Elizabethtown victory. Rounding out the All-Tournament Team was Shenandoah's Jenny Gray and Grove City's Abby Moose. Also, Grove City's Stephanie Murphy was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. |
