Late Run Not Enough for Etown as Blue Jays Fall 54-51 to Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- Despite a 12-point run late in the game, Elizabethtown was unable to completely erase its deficit against Susquehanna and lost a close 54-51 road game to the host Crusaders Saturday to fall to 4-14 overall and 2-6 in the Commonwealth Conference.

The game was Susquehanna's first conference win of the season, as the Crusaders improved to 1-7 in the conference and 6-11 overall.

Susquehanna jumped out to a 31-22 lead by halftime, and the Crusaders extended their lead to a commanding 50-33 with 8:41 left to play. Susquehanna would not score again for over five minutes and would not score on anything other than foul shots for the rest of the game.

Elizabethtown began its comeback at 7:40 remaining when Kara Terhune (Naples, ME/Lake Region) hit a two point jumper to begin a series of 12 unanswered Blue Jay points. At 4:14, Jennifer Roberts (Eagleville, PA/Methaction) made a layup to cut Susquehanna's lead down to 50-45.

Susquehanna's Alison Ream made a pair of free throws at 3:48 to extend the lead to 52-45, but Terhune struck back ten seconds later with a layup for Etown to make the score 52-47. With a three-pointer by Cherrissa McCoy (Trevose, PA/Bensalem) at 2:47, Etown cut Susquehanna's lead to just two points, 52-50. McCoy made one out of two foul shots at 2:25 to pull the Blue Jays to within one, 52-51.

The score remained 52-51 for over two minutes, until just 14 seconds before the end of the game, when Susquehanna's Courtney Sokol was fouled and made both of her free throws.

McCoy and Stephanie Scinto (Westwood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) led Elizabethtown in scoring with 14 points each, and Roberts led the Blue Jays with eight rebounds. Elizabethtown shot 33.3% (19-for-57) from the floor and 58.3% (seven-for-12) from the foul line for the game.

Emily Kurtz came off the bench to lead Susquehanna in scoring with 17 points, including a nine-for-11 performance from the foul line. Sokol led the Crusaders with 12 rebounds.

Elizabethtown returns to action at home against conference rival Widener Tuesday, January 29 for a 7:00 p.m. game.
