ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Etown Falls to Washington & Jefferson, 57-45, College of New Jersey Defeats Lycoming, 58-51, on First Day of Blue Jay Classic ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Washington & Jefferson continued its fast start to the 2002-03 season Saturday, defeating Elizabethtown 57-45 to improve to 7-0 overall while the Blue Jays, hosting their annual Blue Jay Classic tournament, dropped to 3-5 this season. In the tournament's other game Saturday, the College of New Jersey (7-2) defeated Lycoming (3-5), 58-51. Cristin Braun (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) was Elizabethtown's leading point scorer, going five-for-nine from the field and four-for-six from the free throw line for 14 points. She also led the team with three steals. Jennifer Roberts (Eagleville, PA/Methacton) scored nine points and pulled down seven rebounds as well for the Blue Jays. Shawndra McDonald led Washington & Jefferson in points, rebounds, and assists with 13, 10, and four, respectively. Amanda Stanonik and Lauren Hull each added 12 points for W&J, and Stanonik led the with four steals as well as pulling down seven rebounds. Etown shot just 23.2% (13-for-56) from the field and 12.5% (2-for-16) from three-point range. The Blue Jays also turned the ball over 20 times against 18 for Washington & Jefferson, and they were out-rebounded 47-39. In the second game of the day, the College of New Jersey pulled out a hard-fought win against Lycoming. TCNJ went up by as many as 15 points in the second half, only to see Lycoming pull to within four points in the game's closing minutes. Lycoming actually out-shot TCNJ 56-49, but the College of New Jersey shot 44.9% from the field against just 33.9% for Lycoming. Liz Martin led TCNJ with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Alexa Shields had a team high of seven assists to go with her 11 points. Martin shot five-for-nine from the field. Mindy Culp led Lycoming with 21 points and three assists, and Lyndy LeVan added 14 points and 10 rebounds to the Warriors' efforts. Elizabethtown and Lycoming will square off in the consolation game of the tournament at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, and the championship game will pit Washington & Jefferson and the College of New Jersey at 3:00 p.m. in Thompson Gymnasium. 1/4/03 2:00 p.m. at Thompson Gymnasium, Elizabethtown, Pa. 1/4/03 4:05 p.m. at Thompson Gymnasium, Elizabethtown, Pa. |
