College of New Jersey Wins Blue Jay Classic With 73-47 Win Over Washington & Jefferson, Etown Falls to Lycoming 54-44 in Consolation Game; Etown's Cristin Braun Named to All-Tournament Team

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The College of New Jersey (8-2) won the 2003 Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic title by handing Washington & Jefferson (7-1) its first loss of the season in the tournament's championship game Sunday. In the consolation game, host Elizabethtown (3-6) fell to Lycoming (4-5) in a 54-44 showing.

Lycoming and Etown battled to a 20-20 tie in the first half as the visiting Warriors shot just 25.9% from the field. Lycoming turned around and shot 50% in the second half to pull out the victory. Etown shot 31.0% from the field for the game.

Cristin Braun (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) led Elizabethtown with 14 points on five-for-11 shooting and six rebounds and was later named Etown's only representative on the all-tournament team. Jessica Hollinshead (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) scored 11 points and also pulled down six rebounds for the Blue Jays.

Mindy Culp led Lycoming with 13 points scored, and Lyndy LeVan, the Warriors' only all-tournament team member, scored 10 points and pulled down a game high of 13 rebounds in just 20 minutes of playing time before fouling out.

In the tournament championship, the College of New Jersey leapt out to an early lead and by halftime held a 41-24 advantage over Washington & Jefferson. TCNJ out-rebounded the Presidents 45-26 and shot 49.2% from the field against 35.2% for W&J.

Adrienne Warner, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, led the College of New Jersey with 16 points on six-for-nine shooting from the field. Kristen McCandless scored 10 points for TCNJ on five-for-ten shooting. Also named to the all-tournament team from the College of New Jersey were point guard
Alexa Shields, who scored six points Sunday, and Liz Martin, who had six points and three assists against Washington & Jefferson.

Shawndra McDonald was W&J's only member of the all-tournament team, and the point guard led the team with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals while scoring 10 points against the College of New Jersey. Amanda Stanonik came off the bench to lead Washington & Jefferson with 15 points on a five-for-ten performance from the field and a five-for-five mark at the free throw line.

Elizabethtown will return to action Wednesday, January 8 as the host of local rival Franklin & Marshall in a 6:00 p.m. game.
