ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SThird-Ranked Scranton Defeats Elizabethtown, 83-63, Blue Jays Suffer Fourth Straight Loss SCRANTON, Pa. --- The University of Scranton, currently ranked third in the nation, continued its hot start to the 2002-03 season with an 83-63 win over Elizabethtown to improve to 12-0 overall. The Blue Jays suffered their fourth straight loss and dropped to 3-8 overall following the road game. The host Royals catapulted to a 50-28 lead in the first half, and Elizabethtown managed to gain two points on Scranton on the second half. Etown shot 36.1% (26-for-72) from the field, while Scranton shot 53.2% (33-for-62). The teams were even in rebounding with 43 apiece. Cherrissa McCoy (Trevose, PA/Bensalem) led Elizabethtown in scoring with 18 points and in assists and steals with four each. Freshman Dana Voit (Jefferson Mills, PA/Thomas Jefferson) came off the bench to add 14 points to the Blue Jays' total. She hit all three of her three-point attempts and went five-for-seven from the field. Jessica Hollinshead (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) added 10 points on four-for-eight shooting, and Cristin Braun (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) led Etown in rebounding with seven while scoring five points. Tara Gemmel led Scranton in scoring with 20 points, and Kate Pierangeli added 19 points while leading the Royals with seven assists and four steals. AnneMarie Russo led Scranton with nine rebounds and scored 11 points, and Katie Dougherty scored 10 points for the Royals on five-for-seven shooting. Elizabethtown will return to action on the road Wednesday, January 15 against Commonwealth Conference rival Moravian in a 7:00 p.m. game. 1-11-03 2:00 pm at Long Center, Scranton, Pa. |
