ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Etown's Losing Streak Extends to Program-Record Six Games with 54-47 Loss to Conference Rival Juniata ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown is now in the midst of the longest losing streak in the history of its women's basketball program, as a 54-47 home loss to Commonwealth Conference rival Juniata Saturday stretched the Blue Jays' current skid to six games. The old record of five consecutive losses was originally set in the program's second season of 1929-30, and it was tied on four occasions, once at the end of the 1930-31 and beginning of the 1931-32 campaigns, once in 1950-51, once in 2001-02, and once in this year's streak before today. The Blue Jays are now 3-10 overall and 1-3 in the conference with the loss, while Juniata improves to 5-9 overall and 1-3 in the conference. Elizabethtown fell behind early, scoring the opening bucket on Dana Voit (Jefferson Mills, PA/Thomas Jefferson) layup but missing its next ten shots from the field, and was down 9-4 with 14:50 to go in the first half. Etown surged back and took a 20-10 lead by 6:15 remaining in the first half, and the Blue Jays held on to a 26-23 lead at halftime. Juniata and Etown were locked in a tie on six separate occasions in the second half, the latest coming with 1:27 remaining to play and the score tied up at 47-47. From there, Juniata scored seven unanswered points to clinch the win. The top scorers for Elizabethtown, which shot just 29.6% (16-for-54) from the field, were junior forward Jessica Hollinshead (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown), and freshman forward Christina Buso (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook), with nine points each. Freshman forward Cristin Braun (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) scored eight points and led the team with seven rebounds. Elizabethtown was forced to start three freshmen in the game with two of its top players sidelined by injuries. Jen LaCount (Johnstown, PA/Westmont Hilltop) led Juniata in scoring with 16 points, and she, along with Jen Uhrich (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra), led the team in rebounding with eight each. Uhrich also scored 11 points for Juniata. Etown returns to action on the road Tuesday, January 21 against Commonwealth Conference rival Lebanon Valley in a 6:00 p.m. game. 1/18/03 2:00 p.m. at Thompson Gymnasium, Elizabethtown, Pa. |
