ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Randolph-Macon Defeats Etown, 77-65 ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Randolph-Macon (10-6) won its seventh straight game with a 77-65 win over Elizabethtown (3-12) at Etown Thursday night. Etown, which started four freshmen in the game, got off to a strong start and took a 13-5 lead in the opening seven minutes. Etown, using a high-pressure defense, forced 12 Randolph-Macon turnovers in the fist half, but Randolph-Macon steadily crept back into the game in the middle of the first half on the strength of its shooting, as the Yellow Jackets shot 50% (14-for-28) in the first half against 31.4% (11-for-35) for Etown. By halftime, Randolph-Macon held a 38-31 lead. The Yellow Jackets maintained their lead in the second half, although Elizabethtown crept to within six points of Randolph-Macon with two minutes to go. Junior forward Jessica Hollinshead (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown), Etown's only upperclass starter, led the Blue Jays in scoring with 16 points and in blocked shots with three. She also had five rebounds. The Blue Jays' top rebounder was freshman center Christina Buso (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook), who pulled down eight rebounds and scored eight points. Sophomore guard Mary Wismer (Millersville, PA/Lancaster Country Day) added nine points and made one of three three-point attempts for Etown, and freshman forward Amy Nawoczenski (Sinking Spring, PA/Holy Name) also scored nine points, and she shot four-for-five from the field. Jennie Carter came off the bench to lead five Randolph-Macon players in double-digit scoring with 20 points. She also led the team with nine rebounds and shot nine-for-12 from the field. Allison King scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Sarah Crider (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) added 13 points and six rebounds on five-for-eight shooting from the field. Megan Silva scored 11 points and had five assists for Randolph-Macon, and Michelle Orton had 10 points on five-for-six shooting with six rebounds. Also, Yellow Jacket sophomore Emily Crider (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) blocked five Blue Jay shots. Etown will return to action on the road against Commonwealth Conference rival Albright at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, January 25. 1/23/03 7:00 p.m. at Thompson Gymnasium, Elizabethtown, Pa. |
