ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Etown Defeats Widener, 66-58, for First Conference Win of Season ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the Commonwealth Conference with a 66-58 win at home Tuesday night over Widener (3-1, 0-1). It was Etown's second win in a row, and it was the first time the Blue Jays had won back-to-back games since late February and early March of 2001, when Etown defeated Messiah to win the Commonwealth Conference championship and defeated Swarthmore in its opening NCAA tournament game in consecutive contests. It was rough sailing for Elizabethtown early on, as Widener held a 10-2 lead seven minutes into the game. By late in the first half, Etown had accumulated a 26-21 lead, only to see Widener come back and leave the game in a 27-27 tie at halftime. Elizabethtown shot just 26.5% from the field in the first half, while Widener shot 42.3% in the first half. The teams' respective shooting fortunes from the floor in the second half formed a complete chiasmus with the first half, as Etown this time shot 40.7% while Widener shot just 29.3%. Also helping Etown's efforts was the strength of its free throw shooting, as the Blue Jays shot 23-for-29 (79.3%) from the charity stripe for the game and Widener went just 11-for-22 from the free throw line. Etown also shot a blistering 16-for-19 (84.2%) in foul shooting in the second half. Additionally, the Blue Jays out-rebounded Widener 53-41, and they had 13 steals against eight for Widener. Widener did, however, have fewer turnovers with 15 against 21 for Elizabethtown. Two Etown freshmen hit double digits in rebounding, with Amy Nawoczenski (Sinking Spring, PA/Holy Name) leading the way with 13 rebounds from off the bench. Christina Buso (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) had 11 rebounds as well for Etown, and she scored eight points. Juniors Cherrissa McCoy (Trevose, PA/Bensalem) and Jessica Smith (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) both led Etown in scoring with 15 points apiece. McCoy went 11 of 12 from the free throw line, while Smith went six of 13 from the field, hit two of Etown's three three-pointers, and led the Blue Jays with four assists and four steals. Junior Jessica Hollinshead (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) scored 12 points for Etown on five-for-eight shooting, and scored the brunt of her points after accumulating four fouls. Nicole Stanley (West Conshohocken, PA/Upper Merion) led Widener in scoring with 19 points and assists with four. Nikki Carden (Phoenixville, PA/Villa Maria Academy) scored 13 points for Widener, and Erin Nemshick (York, PA/Central York) led the team with 14 rebounds. Elizabethtown will return to action on the road Saturday, December 7 at Commonwealth Conference rival Susquehanna in a 1:00 p.m. game. At Thompson Gymnasium, Elizabethtown, Pa. |
