In the first game of the evening, Messiah College downed Alvernia College 69-57. Eli Cook (Wilmington, DE/Wilmington Christian) was Messiah's top scorer with 20 points and an eight-for-ten performance from the field. She also led the Falcons in rebounding with nine. Katrina Green (Laurel, MD/Laurel) added 14 points for Messiah, and Kristin Sassaman (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) scored 12 points. Erin McIntyre (Orwigsburg, PA/Blue Mountain) and Trish O'Gurek (Summit Hill, PA/Panther Valley) were Alvernia's top scorers with ten points each. O'Gurek, who ran into foul trouble shortly after starting the game and sat out almost the entire first half, reached her point total in just 14 minutes of playing time. After plowing out to a 10-4 lead at the opening of their game, the Blue Jays (7-3) saw Buffalo State (4-5) creep back into the game and tie the score at 18-18 near the middle of the first half. From there, Elizabethtown embarked on a 17 point run to go up 35-18. Buffalo State mounted another comeback late in the first half, and the Bengals cut Etown's lead to 37-25 by halftime. Elizabethtown responded by burying Buffalo State in the second half, out-scoring the Bengals 33-10 after halftime. Etown's defense swiped the ball from Buffalo State 18 times and forced 32 Bengal turnovers, while the Blue Jays turned the ball over just 12 times. Buffalo State was also held to 28.8% (15-for-52) shooting for the game, including a five-for-24 (20.8%) performance in the second half. Etown's top scorer and rebounder was Jessica Hollinshead (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) with 18 points and eight boards, respectively. Jessica Smith (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) added 14 points and tossed out four assists, and Megan Wolfe (Jonestown, PA/Northern Lebanon) led Etown in assists with six while scoring seven points. Buffalo State's top scorer was Jacey Brooks (Machias, NY/Franklinville) with nine points, while Amanda Benoit (Deerfield, NY/Whitesboro) came off the bench to lead the Bengals in rebounding with eight rebounds. Messiah will face Buffalo State at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 10, while Etown will face Alvernia at 3:00 p.m. The 2004 Blue Jay Classic is not following a tournament format due to the fact that Elizabethtown and Messiah are both members of the Commonwealth Conference, and as a result already have to play each other twice in the regular season. 1/9/04 6:00 p.m. at Thompson Gymnasium, Elizabethtown, Pa. 1/9/04 8:00 p.m. at Thompson Gymnasium, Elizabethtown, Pa. |
