ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Widener Halts Etown's Win Streak at Nine Games, Blue Jays Fall 69-55 in Conference Game ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College lost for the first time since the opening weekend of the 2003-04 season Saturday, falling to Commonwealth Conference rival Widener 69-55 at home Saturday afternoon. The loss ends Etown's nine-game winning streak and drops the Blue Jays' record to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference. With the win, Widener improves to 11-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference, and the game Widener's eighth consecutive victory. Elizabethtown carried a 36-33 advantage into halftime, but the Blue Jays ran out of steam in the second half, shooting just 26.7% (eight-for-30) from the field and turning the ball over 14 times after halftime. Etown turned the ball over just six times in the first half and shot 42.9% (12-for-28) from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Mary Wismer (Millersville, PA/Lancaster Country Day School) was Elizabethtown's top scorer on the day, totaling 14 points from off the bench. She also had six rebounds in 15 minutes of playing time. Also hitting double digits in scoring for Etown were Cristin Braun (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) with 13 points and a team high of five assists, Jen Roberts (Eagleville, PA/Methacton) with 11 points and a team high of nine rebounds, and Jessica Hollinshead (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) with 11 points and seven rebounds. Widener's top scorer was Nicole Stanley with 20 points, and Kate Smyth added 15 points for the Pioneers. Nikki Carden scored 13 points and pulled down six rebounds, and Erin Nemshick scored 12 points while leading Widener in rebounds with 14. Elizabethtown will return to action on the road Tuesday, January 20 in a conference game against nationally ranked Messiah College at 7:30 p.m. 1/17/04 2:00 p.m. at Thompson Gymnasium, Elizabethtown, Pa. |
