Late Messiah Run Sinks Etown, 53-43

GRANTHAM, Pa. --- A late 10-2 run over the final couple of minutes put defending Commonwealth Conference champion Messiah College over the top in a 53-43 victory over Elizabethtown College in Grantham, Pa. Tuesday night. Etown drops to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference with the loss, while Messiah improves to 13-2 overall and 5-0 in the conference.

Elizabethtown held a slim advantage over Messiah in shooting percentage from the field for the game, going 36.2% (17-for-47) from the field, as opposed to 33.9% (20-for-59) for the host Falcons. Etown also made three out of seven three-point attempts, while Messiah fired up 16 threes and only made four of them. Elizabethtown, however, turned the ball over 30 times in the game, while Messiah committed 19 turnovers. Messiah also held a 41-34 advantage in rebounds.

Cristin Braun (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) was Etown's top scorer with 11 points. She also tied with teammate Jen Roberts (Eagleville, PA/Methacton) for the team lead in rebounds with seven, and Roberts chipped in 10 points. Also scoring 10 points for Etown was Jessica Hollinshead (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown).

Katrina Green was Messiah's top scorer with 20 points, and Jess Unick added 12 points. Eli Cook and Kristin Sassaman both led Messiah in rebounds with nine each, and Sassaman blocked five shots, while Cook had three swats.

Elizabethtown will return to action as the host of Lebanon Valley in a 2:00 p.m. Commonwealth Conference game Saturday, January 24.
