Etown Edges Dickinson, 80-77

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown staved off a late Dickinson rally to defeat the Red Devils, 80-77, at Thompson Gymnasium Thursday night. The Blue Jays improved to 2-3 overall with the win, while Dickinson drops to 3-2 overall.

After battling to a 38-38 draw in the first half, Elizabethtown gained a 71-61 lead over Dickinson late in the second half before Dickinson crept back into the game in the closing minutes. Repeatedly fouled by Dickinson in an effort to keep the clock from running down, the Blue Jays converted all but one of their free throw attempts in the final minute to hang on to the lead.

Jessica Hollinshead (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) led a cadre of five Blue Jays in double digits in scoring with 16 points. She also led Etown in rebounds with eight, and she shot eight for 13 from the field. Jessica Smith (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) found her shooting touch and scored 12 points, her highest total thus far this season. She shot five-for-nine from the field and two-for-four from three-point range. Cristin Braun (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) scored 11 points and tossed around six assists. Christina Buso (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) came off the bench and provided the Blue Jays with a solid inside presence, going five-for-eight from the floor en route to scoring 11 points. Megan Wolfe (Jonestown, PA/Northern Lebanon) added 10 points and had six assists.

Piper Etess (Old Lyme, CT/Lyme-Old Lyme) was Dickinson's leading scorer with 22 points, including 20 in the first half alone, and she was also the Red Devils' top rebounder with eight. Megan Shelley (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) and Patrice Johnson (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) each scored 16 points for Dickinson.

Etown will return to action as the host of Commonwealth Conference rival Albright Saturday, December 6 at 2:00 p.m. The game is part of a day of festivities surrounding the kick-off of the year-long 75th anniversary of Elizabethtown College athletics celebration. The first official intercollegiate athletic contest in Etown history took place December 8, 1928 when the men's basketball team defeated Millersville, 27-22.
