Elizabethtown Falls to #16 Messiah 88-40 in Commonwealth Conference Opener

GRANTHAM, Pa. --- Elizabethtown fell to nationally 16th-ranked Messiah College 88-40 on the road Tuesday night in the Commonwealth Conference opener for both teams. Etown dropped to 0-4 overall with the loss, while Messiah improved to 4-0.

Messiah’s defense held Elizabethtown to just 15-for-53 (28.3%) shooting from the field for the game and a 6-for-28 (21.4%) performance in the second half. Messiah shot 41-for-65 (63.1%) from the field. The host Falcons swiped the ball 20 times as the Blue Jays committed 32 turnovers. Elizabethtown, on the other hand, out-rebounded Messiah 35-31 and held an 18-8 edge in offensive rebounds.

Erin Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington Co.) and Audrey Hitz (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona) were Elizabethtown’s leading scorers with eight points each. Cristin Braun (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) was Etown’s top rebounder with seven rebounds, and she scored four points.

Sarah Ringer led six Messiah players in double-digit scoring with 14 points, and Messiah’s top rebounders were Eli Cook and Ashley Brooks, who each had six rebounds and scored 10 and 12 points, respectively. Cook also had seven steals and three blocked shots. Nicki Lobach led Messiah in assists and scored 12 points. Shellie Remmel and Lauren Schurr added 12 points each for Messiah.

Elizabethtown will return to action on the road Thursday, December 1 against Immaculata University in a non-conference game at 7:00 p.m.
