ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Elizabethtown Beats Briarcliffe 69-36, Newport News Apprentice School Defeats Eastern 75-53, on First Day of Etown Whitmoyer Blue Jay Classic ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Wide margins of victory were the norm on the first night of Elizabethtown College’s Whitmoyer Blue Jay Classic Friday, as Newport News Apprentice School downed Eastern University 75-53 and as the host Blue Jays up-ended Briarcliffe College (NY) 69-36. As a result, Eastern (0-7) will face Briarcliffe (5-4) in the tournament’s consolation game at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, and Elizabethtown (3-4) will take on Newport News Apprentice School (5-3) in the championship game at 4:00 p.m. Saturday. In the night’s first game, Newport News Apprentice held Eastern to just 7-for-27 shooting from the field and 17 points in the first half as the Builders vaulted to a 27-17 lead by halftime. Over the course of the entire game, Eastern committed 44 turnovers, and the Apprentice School tallied 33 steals. The Apprentice school, by contrast, made 23 turnovers, and the Eagles had just eight steals. Eastern did, however, hold the edge in rebounding, 50-46. Tyechia Cooke (Newport News, VA/Heritage) led the Apprentice School in scoring with 16 points on a 7-for-13 performance from the field and 2-for-2 shooting from the free throw line, and Brandi Coffer (Chesapeake, VA/Deep Creek) added 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field and 3-for-4 shooting from the charity stripe. The Apprentice School’s top rebounder wias Cametrice Butcher (Cheseapeake, VA/Western Branch), who came off the bench to pull down eight rebounds. Whitney Lassiter (Suffolk, VA/ Lakeland) led Newport News Apprentice in steals with six and tied for the team lead in assists with Cooke with four, and she scored eight points. Eastern’s lone scorer in double digits was Raya Shores (Athens, PA/Athens Area), who tallied 20 points by shooting 7-for-12 from the field and 6-for-10 in free throws. Abbey Reed (Knox, PA/Keystone) led the Eagles in assists with six, and she scored eight points and pulled down eight rebounds. Jacey Bray (Murphy’s, CA/Bret Hart) led Eastern in rebounds with 18 and in blocked shots with four, and she added seven points on 3-for-6 shooting from the field and a 1-for-4 effort from the free throw line. In the second game, Elizabethtown plowed ahead to a 40-19 lead by halftime, as the Blue Jays held Briarcliffe to 9-for-25 (36.0%) shooting in the first half. Over the course of the game, Etown out-rebounded Briarcliffe 47-35 and out-shot the Seahawks 29-for-68 (42.6%) to 16-for-53 (30.2%) from the field. The Blue Jays made 24 steals off 34 Briarcliffe turnovers as well, while Briarcliffe made 15 steals off 21 Etown turnovers. Erin Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington Co.) finished as Elizabethtown’s top scorer with 20 points on 8-for-21 shooting from the field and a 4-for-6 performance from the charity stripe, and she pulled down five rebounds and made three steals. Cristin Braun (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) tied for the Etown team lead in steals with four and in rebounds with six while shooting 6-for-10 from the field to total 12 points. Also pulling down six rebounds and making four steals was Megan Quinn (Millersville, PA/Penn Manor) from off the bench, who scored six points as well. Melissa Meyer (Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart) also grabbed six rebounds from off the bench for the Blue Jays, and Jenn Montague (Newark, DE/St. Mark’s) made four steals from off the bench, too. Mell Fitzpatrick (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg Area) led Etown in assists with six, and Amanda Reid (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) came off the bench to score nine points and pull down five rebounds for the Blue Jays. Toni Jones (Brooklyn, NY) was Briarcliffe’s leading scorer with 19 points on 8-for-19 shooting from the field and 3-for-5 shooting from the free throw line, and Jovanna Young (Elmont, NY) pulled down ten rebounds to lead the Seahawks.
