Newport News Apprentice School Defeats Host Elizabethtown 72-59 to Win Whitmoyer Blue Jay Classic Championship; Eastern Gets First Win of Season 64-61 over Briarcliffe in Consolation Game

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Newport News Apprentice School (6-3) won the Elizabethtown College Whitmoyer Blue Jay Classic title Saturday evening by defeating the host Blue Jays (3-5) 72-59. In the tournament’s consolation game, Eastern University (1-7) got its first win of the season 64-61 over Briarcliffe College (5-5).

The All-Tournament Team consisted of Toni Jones (Brooklyn, NY) of Briarcliffe, Raya Shores (Athens, PA/Athens Area) of Eastern, Cristin Braun (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) of Elizabethtown, Erin Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington Co.) of Elizabethtown, Rahshann Lewter (Hampton, VA/Hampton) of Newport News Apprentice, and Brandi Coffer (Chesapeake, VA/Deep Creek) of Newport News Apprentice. Coffer was the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

In the consolation game, Mandy Kuiken (Pompton Plains, NJ/Eastern Christian) led Eastern in scoring with 21 points, and she drained five out of 13 three-point attempts. Shores added 19 points, and Abbey Reed (Knox, PA/Keystone) scored 11 points for Eastern. Jessica Rourke (Riverhead, NY) led Briarcliffe with 18 points and three steals, and Jones added 16 points and six rebounds. Marvasia Boldon (Elmont, NY) scored 10 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for Briarcliffe.

In the championship game, Newport News Apprentice held a 34-25 lead by halftime and out-rebounded Elizabethtown 48-22 over the course of the game.

Braun led Elizabethtown with 23 points had three steals. Walton added 22 points, and Amanda Reid (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) led Etown in rebounds with eight.

Coffer scored 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds for Newport News Apprentice, and Dayna Twyne (Bridgeport, CT/Bayside) added 16 points and eight rebounds. Lewter scored 13 points and had four assists and four rebounds, and Whitney Lassiter (Suffolk, VA/Lakeland) scored 12 points and had four steals and six assists for the Apprentice School.

Elizabethtown will return to action December 31 when it faces the University of the Virgin Islands on the road.
