ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Elizabethtown One Win From 900 Mark; Erin Walton Scores 1,000th Career Point; Etown Blows Out Briarcliffe 84-34 on First Day of R1 Sports Blue Jay Classic ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- And then there was one. Elizabethtown College is now one win away from becoming just the third NCAA women’s basketball program ever, as well as the first NCAA Division III women’s basketball program ever, to reach the 900 all-time win plateau. The Blue Jays blew out Briarcliffe College 84-34 Friday night on the opening day of the 2006 R1 Sports Blue Jay Classic Tournament to seal victory number 899. Adding to the celebratory atmosphere Friday night, Elizabethtown junior Erin Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington Co.) became the 22nd Blue Jay women’s basketball player to score her 1,000th career point. In the Blue Jay Classic’s other first round game, Newport News Apprentice School downed Penn State-Harrisburg 103-62. As a result, Briarcliffe (4-3) and Penn State-Harrisburg (3-4) will face off in the tournament’s consolation game at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 9, while Elizabethtown (6-2) will face Newport News Apprentice (5-2) at 3:00 p.m. Saturday in the Blue Jays’ attempt to earn both the tournament championship and the program’s 900th all-time victory.
Walton scored 33 points against Briarcliffe to bring her career total to 1,004 and move into 21st place on Elizabethtown’s all-time scoring list. She also had four steals, tying for the team lead, and six rebounds. Walton went 2-for-2 from the free throw line, brining her total of consecutive free throws made to 42. Megan Quinn (Millersville, PA/Penn Manor) added 13 points for Elizabethtown, pulled down nine rebounds and had five assists. Ali Jury (Halifax, PA/Halifax) came off the bench to lead Elizabethtown in rebounds with 10, and she scored eight points. Megan Romano (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) tossed out a game-high total of nine assists for Etown, and Mell Fitzpatrick (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg Area) made four steals and had three assists for the Blue Jays. Amanda Reid (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) led Etown in blocked shots with four, scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds. Jenese Bennet was Briarcliffe’s leading scorer with 20 points. Jovanna Young added 12 points and led Briarcliffe in rebounds with 10, five of which were offensive. Elizabethtown held a 20-7 advantage in steals over Briarcliffe and a 52-39 edge in rebounds. In the tournament’s other game Friday, Newport News Apprentice had seven players score 10 or more points, and none of the Builders’ players had fewer than eight points. As a result, despite 103 total points for Newport News Apprentice, the Builders’ top scorer was Tia Walker (Hampton, VA/Hampton) with just 13. She also had five assists. Tyechia Cooke (Newport News, VA/Heritage) and Ashley Barlow (Allentown, PA/Louis Dieruff) each scored 12 points for Newport News Apprentice, and Barlow had 10 rebounds. Taquana Sanderlin (Norfolk, VA/Lake Taylor) added 11 points and six assists, and Dayna Twyne (Hampton, VA/Hampton), Whitney Lassiter (Suffolk, VA/Lakeland) and Cametrice Butcher (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch) all scored 10 points apiece. The Apprentice School’s top rebounder was Shameka Warren ( Suffolk, VA/ Nansemond River) with 12, eight of which were offensive, and she scored eight points. Nicole Adams (Newport, PA H.S.) led Penn-State Harrisburg in scoring with 24 points and in rebounds with six. Brooke Conjar (Steelton-Highspire H.S.) scored 18 points for Penn State-Harrisburg, and she shot 5-for-10 from three-point range.
