ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Elizabethtown Remains at 899 All-Time Wins with 64-62 Loss to Newport News Apprentice in Championship Game of R1 Sports Blue Jay Classic; Blue Jays to Resume Drive for 900 January 6 ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College remains frozen at 899 all-time victories following a 64-62 loss to Newport News Apprentice School in the championship game of Etown’s R1 Sports Blue Jay Classic tournament Saturday. The Blue Jays, which are trying to become the first NCAA Division III women’s basketball program and only the third NCAA women’s basketball program ever to scale the 900 win plateau, will now have to wait until their next game January 6, 2007 to take another crack at the milestone. In the tournament’s consolation game, Penn State-Harrisburg downed Briarcliffe College 70-50. The All-Tournament Team consisted of Jenese Bennett from Briarcliffe, Brooke Conjar (Steelton-Highspire H.S.) of Penn State Harrisburg, Amanda Reid (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) of Elizabethtown, Erin Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington Co.) of Elizabethtown, Tia Walker (Hampton, VA/Hampton) of Newport News Apprentice, and tournament Most Valuable Player Rahshann Lewter (Hampton, VA/Hampton) of Newport News Apprentice. Elizabethtown took a 36-30 lead over Newport News Apprentice into halftime and led most of the game. Newport News Apprentice took a 63-62 lead, its first since the first half, with 3:02 remaining in the game when Lewter made a layup. Natasha Jones (Hampton, VA/Hampton) hit a free throw for Newport News Apprentice with 14 seconds left for the only other scoring at the end of the game. Walton led Elizabethtown in scoring with 18 points, and Reid led the Blue Jays in rebounds with 15 while adding 12 points. Jenn Montague (Newark, DE/St. Mark’s) added 15 points, all of which came in the first half from off the bench, for Etown. Newport News Apprentice School held a 17-3 advantage in steals over Elizabethtown, and Etown committed 26 turnovers against 12 for the Builders. Lewter finished the game with 16 points and six rebounds, and Walker added 11 points and four steals. Tyechia Cooke (Newport News, VA/Heritage) scored 10 points and had four steals for the Builders. Elizabethtown will try for 900 again in its next game after Winter Break Saturday, January 6 at home against Trinity College (CT) in a 2:00 p.m. contest.
