ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Elizabethtown Wins R1 Sports Blue Jay Classic Title With 65-54 Victory over Rowan; Amanda Reid Named Most Valuable Player Elizabethtown/Rowan box score ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Senior Amanda Reid (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) scored a game-high 14 points and added 10 rebounds to earn Most Valuable Player honors as Elizabethtown College defeated Rowan University 65-54 in the championship game of the R1 Sports Blue Jay Classic at Thompson Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Reid, who posted the sixth double-double of her career, went 3-for-3 from the field and 8-for-8 from the foul line while adding three assists and three blocked shots for the Blue Jays (5-2 overall), who earned the tournament championship for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. Junior Megan Quinn (Millersville, PA/Penn Manor) notched her first career double-double for the Blue Jays with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds while senior Erin Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington County) added 10 points and five rebounds to earn a spot on the All-Tournament team. Brynn DeGroff led the Profs (4-3 overall) with 11 points, six rebounds and six steals, but she was the lone player to hit double figures as Rowan shot 30.3 percent (20-for-66) from the field and 10-for-25 (40 percent) at the foul line. The Blue Jays never trailed in the contest, but led just 36-35 at halftime as the Profs hit a pair of three-pointers in the final 1:40 of the half to cut a seven-point deficit to one. In the second half, the Blue Jays took control as they scored the first 10 points of the half while holding the Profs without a point until a basket by Michelle Lala with 14:01 to play. Walton scored six of Etown's 10 points during the run. Elizabethtown's lead would grow to as many as 14 points on three occasions, as the Profs would get no closer than nine points in the final nine minutes of the game. Jillian Kane and Amanda Jennings each scored eight points off the bench for Rowan, who received 30 of their 54 points from substitutes. Jennings also matched Lala and DeGroff for the team high with six rebounds. Overall, the Blue Jays shot 42.6 percent (20-for-47) from the field and connected on 24-of-29 (82.8 percent) at the foul line. Elizabethtown also finished with a 48-37 edge in rebounds. In the consolation game, Trinity (D.C.) defeated Penn State Harrisburg 76-54 as the Tigers (2-8 overall) were paced by 21 points from Preshuse Jackson and 14 points and 18 rebounds by Danielle Owens. The Lions (2-6 overall) received 19 points from Nicole Wallace while Sandra Adames tallied 14 points and 19 boards.
